Torn between two worlds

Torn between two worlds Shawn is a lifelong learner sharing his education and life experiences as a spiritual consultant. While pursuing an engineering career, Mr.

Shawn Murphy worked his way through high school and college first as a body shop mechanic and then as a machinist. Working as an aerospace engineer for General Dynamics, he started by engineering solutions for production errors on the F-16. And then helped retrofit the F16 with stealth improvements on the existing aircraft. He advanced to become a lead engineer on the Navy’s stealth A-12 program, responsible for all the perimeter structure and its stealth characteristics. Murphy received a master in engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington and an MBA from Texas Christian University, where he became the portfolio manager of the William C Conner foundation. With his experience as an engineer and education in finance, Shawn helped start an institutional asset management company in Lichtenstein, where he became the chief investment officer and equity partner. He continued his work study regime, received the first CFA in Lichtenstein, and then learned how to speak German through the study of philosophy and history in the same language. After the sale of the Lichtenstein company, Shawn partnered with his client in Bermuda and set up an asset management company in Bermuda to focus on the captive insurance industry. While in Bermuda, Shawn started helping entrepreneurs realize their potential and vision first by helping set up a DMTV in partnership with the Bermuda Broadcasting Corporation, and then later setting up MediaMine in California in partnership with a Warner Brothers executive. After moving to Switzerland in 2020, he created Shawn T Murphy Advisory, providing advisory services to entrepreneurs, clairvoyants and those suffering spiritual illnesses. As a member of the Young President’s Organization, Mr. Murphy has chaired a number of global networks in the area of social enterprise, focusing on disadvantaged children and education. Lifelong learning has been a major theme in his life, and he's taken it one step further to be a mentor for others in all walks of life, through his books, papers and blogs.

Twitter (X) changed… and it’s raising red flags
I logged back into Twitter (X) after being away—and what I saw shocked me: more Catholic-leaning content and messaging than before.
As someone who’s been inside that world (I served as a deacon), I’m sharing why I believe institutions can drift far from Jesus’ actual teachings—especially when power and control take over.
Watch, reflect, and tell me what you think.

The “sins forgiven” loophole vs karma accountability

I studied history and noticed something unsettling:
Christian-based societies have repeatedly gone into holy wars… while Buddhist societies rarely do.
My argument: a modern teaching—“believe in Jesus and all your sins are forgiven”—can remove self-responsibility.
Karma + reincarnation says the opposite:
⚖️ you pay for your actions
🧾 every debt is repaid
What do you think—does belief shape culture, or reflect it?

One lifetime isn’t the whole story.
A bigger spiritual map: multiple lifetimes + restoration.
Reincarnation explains learning and accountability over time.
Restoration explains the end goal: healing, return, wholeness—not eternal abandonment.
Whether you agree or not, this lens changes how you see “unfairness,” growth, and mercy.

What if wisdom used to mean science + art + ethics together?

The Ionian Ideal describes an ancient way of thinking where science, art, and virtue were one integrated pursuit of wisdom. We have gained a lot from specialization, but we also split what used to belong together. What would change if we stitched truth, beauty, and goodness back into daily life?

Don’t run away—integrate.

My first spiritual awakening left me torn… because I was working in the financial markets.
But here’s what I learned:
You don’t have to escape the material world to be spiritual.
You have to live here—with a spiritual viewpoint.
Spirituality is revealed in real life:
🕊️ how you deal with conflict
🕯️ how you deal with death
🤝 how you show up for others
Balance the spiritual + the material—and your life changes.

When faith turns into display…
This weekend I attended a First Advent celebration at a major Baroque pilgrimage church in Switzerland—and it hit me: has Christianity traded the Bible’s spiritual message for something more material?
The images, carvings, and “heaven scenes” made me think of the Second Commandment and what we’re actually called to focus on.
Agree or disagree, I’d love to hear your take: Where’s the line between art and idolatry?

What if history is not about winners, but about how people were treated?

The Ionian lens flips how we study history: not just dates and battles, but how societies treated their own people, their neighbors, and even their enemies.
And it points to a blueprint for rebuilding wisdom today: science that asks why, purpose, and meaning, plus disciplined reasoning with Socratic rigor.
What is one value you think every civilization should be judged by?

You don’t have to choose: science + spirituality
If you’ve felt torn between science and religion, you’re not alone.
The pressure to “pick a side” creates extremes.
But there’s a middle path: respect evidence and critical thinking and keep what’s real about inner transformation, meaning, and ethics.
The goal isn’t winning arguments.
It’s becoming whole.

Purpose isn’t found. It’s revealed.
Stop trying to “think” your way into purpose.
Start small. Then look for clues:
✅ where you felt satisfied
✅ where you felt needed
✅ what patterns keep repeating
You don’t need the whole map—just one true step.

Original sin isn’t about an apple… and it changes EVERYTHING.
If “original sin” is just a story about Adam + Eve breaking a rule, we miss the deeper truth—and we inherit a burden that was never the point.
This video connects the dots:
• what original sin is really pointing to
• how theology shifted over time
• why “love your enemies” only makes sense when love is actually restorative
If your enemy is “burning forever,” is that love? Or is love something bigger?

Find your purpose with small steps
Finding purpose doesn’t start with a lightning bolt.
It starts with small steps.
Try this:
✅ look at moments you felt the most satisfied
✅ where you felt truly needed
✅ notice the pattern (building something? helping people?)
You don’t have to find your whole destiny today—just one purpose to move toward.
