🎉 Big News in Glaucoma Research!
We’re thrilled to celebrate Yang Hu, MD, PhD, one of the lead investigators in our Catalyst for a Cure 3 Vision Restoration Initiative, for his newly published paper in the prestigious journal Science Translational Medicine! 🧠👁️
This groundbreaking work sheds light on how mitochondria — the tiny energy powerhouses in neurons — move along optic nerve cells, and identifies promising ways to protect and regenerate the optic nerve, which could one day lead to therapies that preserve or even restore vision lost to glaucoma.
Dr. Hu and his team at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford show how remodeling cellular structures called actin networks can improve mitochondrial transport in neurons — a finding that advances our understanding of neurodegeneration and vision restoration. This research builds on his long-standing work to unravel the mechanisms of optic nerve degeneration and recovery, and moves us closer to a future free from glaucoma-related vision loss.
