Today, on , I want to honor a true hero whose courage forever changed my perspective on healthcare: Philly Bongoley Lutaaya.
More than 30 years ago, as a medical student, I saw a clip from his documentary "Born in Africa." At a time when HIV/AIDS meant silence and deep stigma, Philly Lutaaya was the first major African public figure to openly say, "I am HIV-positive."
That bravery shattered the silence.
For me as a budding clinician, his message was transformative. He reminded us that compassion and dignity must be central to every diagnosis.
Philly Lutaaya isn't just a Ugandan hero—he is a hero for all of Africa.
We celebrate his life and legacy today. Let’s keep fighting stigma and supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS with the same courage he displayed. ❤️
Rest in power, Philly. Your light still shines.
