Dr Henry Nkumbe’s journey to becoming an ophthalmologist started at the age of 13, when his mother took him to see an eye specialist at the Presbyterian Hospital at Ndounge, in the Littoral region of Cameroon. He received his first prescription glasses, which corrected his myopia, giving him perfect vision for the first time
By the time they got to the hospital at 6AM, there were anywhere between 200 and 300 people all waiting to be seen by the same eye specialist. Henry realized for the first time that there were many people who also had eye problems and something needed to be done….

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝟏𝟎:𝟎𝟎𝐚𝐦, 𝐘𝐚𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞́ 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝.

The WTO’s 14th Ministerial Conference officially opens today — 166 nations, thousands of delegates, and the global spotlight right here in Cameroon.

The opening ceremony will be presided over by H.E. Prime Minister Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, personal representative of President Paul Biya. A moment of pride for every Cameroonian.

As I watch this unfold, one question stays with me:

Where is the African patient in this conversation?

Because everything decided in that room — medicine prices, hospital investment, access to technology, the movement of doctors across borders — lands, eventually, at the bedside.

Trade policy is health policy. And this week, I will be making that connection every single day.

Trade policy is health policy.

What gets decided in that conference room this week will affect medicine prices, hospital investment, access to technology and the movement of doctors across our continent for years to come.

African patients deserve to have a seat at that table — even if indirectly.

Ce jeudi s’ouvre la 14ᵉ Conférence ministérielle de l’OMC (MC14) — près de 4 000 délégués, ministres et leaders mondiaux réunis ici, au Cameroun.
La Directrice Générale, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, est déjà sur place. Les échanges ont commencé.

C’est seulement la deuxième fois dans l’histoire que l’Afrique accueille ce sommet mondial — et c’est notre pays qui porte cet honneur. 🇨🇲

Le bien-être des yeux au travail : un enjeu souvent sous-estimé !

💻 Aujourd’hui, plus de 60 % des personnes travaillant devant des écrans souffrent de fatigue oculaire, ce qui peut impacter directement leur productivité et leur bien-être.

La fatigue oculaire se manifeste par :

👉 maux de tête
👉 vision floue
👉 sécheresse oculaire
👉 picotements ou sensibilité à la lumière

⚠️ Elle est souvent liée à :

✔️ une utilisation prolongée des écrans
✔️ un éclairage inadapté
✔️ une mauvaise posture
✔️ un environnement sec (climatisation, chauffage)
✔️ une concentration visuelle intense

🟢 Comment protéger vos yeux au travail ?

✅ Appliquez la règle 20-20-20
(20 secondes de pause toutes les 20 minutes, en regardant à 6 mètres)

✅ Ajustez votre éclairage et évitez les reflets
✅ Clignez régulièrement des yeux
✅ Positionnez votre écran à 50–70 cm, légèrement en dessous du regard
✅ Utilisez des lunettes anti-lumière bleue si nécessaire
✅ Hydratez vos yeux (larmes artificielles si besoin)

👁️ Un simple examen de la vue peut faire toute la différence.
En cas de gêne persistante, consultez un spécialiste.

Cette reconnaissance souligne les efforts constants de notre équipe pour renforcer la qualité des soins, améliorer l’expérience des patients et faire progresser les standards de la prise en charge des maladies oculaires dans notre région.

Nous sommes particulièrement fiers que MICEI fasse partie des deux premiers établissements d’Afrique de l’Ouest et d’Afrique centrale à recevoir cette distinction.

As Director General, I took this opportunity to extend our congratulations and sincere appreciation to the Coach for the dedication and performances of our national team, a great source of pride for the nation.

The visit continued with a guided tour of our facilities, led by the captain of the hospital sports association, highlighting shared values of:

What an incredible moment for the African medical community! 🌍🏥

Y yesterday, the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) was electric as over 1,600 participants gathered for the 66th Annual General Meeting of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS). The highlight? A truly masterful Sir Samuel Manuwa Memorial Lecture delivered by the legendary Professor Hannah Faal.

Professor Faal, a pioneer who transformed eye care across our continent and indeed the world, didn’t just give a lecture she gave a masterclass in visionary thinking.

She reminded us of the prophetic words of Dr. Manuwa (1903 - 1976), spoken nearly 30 years before the Alma Ata Declaration:

“It is incumbent on us... to carry the benefits of modern medicine... into the jungle, into creeks, into the rural areas, to the peasants and farmers in their hamlets and villages.”

Despite our progress, Professor Faal noted that this call remains urgent today, as Africa continues to face the most significant healthcare challenges globally.

What does the surgeon of tomorrow look like?

According to Prof. Faal, they must be more than just a clinician. She challenged us to envision a "Person and Population Surgeon", a hybrid leader who is:
⭐ A Seven-Star Doctor
⭐ An Entrepreneur & Business Expert
⭐ A Cutting-edge Technologist
⭐ A Content Creator & Social Media Influencer

⭐ And most importantly, a human being possessing the one thing technology cannot replicate: empathy, bedside manners, and character.

The Assignment: "The Fern" 🌿

In a move that defined her reputation as an expert teacher, Prof. Faal titled her talk "The Fern." But she didn't explain why. Instead, she left the audience, including the President of WACS, with an assignment: Discover the significance of the Fern for yourself .

Is it the fern's ancient resilience? Its ability to thrive in the shadows? Or perhaps its patterned nature, where every small leaf reflects the strength of the whole?

To my colleagues and friends in the medical field: How are you preparing to be that "Seven-Star" professional? And what is your take on the mystery of "The Fern"?

La 66ᵉ Assemblée Générale Annuelle du West African College of Surgeons se tient à Accra, au Ghana, du 8 au 12 février 2026.

Lors de la cérémonie d’ouverture, riche en couleurs et en symboles, le Président du Ghana, John Mahama, Grand Patron du Congrès, a rendu un vibrant hommage aux pères fondateurs du Collège.

Il a notamment salué la mémoire de Victor Anomah Ngu et de Sir Manuwa, rappelant que leur vision continue de bénéficier à des générations de spécialistes et à d’innombrables patients.

Il convient de rappeler que le Professeur Victor Anomah Ngu fut un chirurgien camerounais de renommée mondiale, chercheur émérite et ancien Ministre de la Santé.

C’était un moment profondément émouvant de voir son héritage reconnu à un si haut niveau, bien au-delà des frontières du Cameroun.

The 66th Annual General Meeting of the West African College of Surgeons is taking place in Accra, Ghana, from February 8–12, 2026.

During the colourful opening ceremony, the President of Ghana, John Mahama, Grand Patron of the Congress, paid tribute to the founding fathers of the College.
He specifically acknowledged Victor Anomah Ngu and Sir Manuwa, noting that their foresight continues to benefit generations of specialists and countless patients.

It is worth recalling that Professor Victor Anomah Ngu was a world-renowned Cameroonian surgeon, distinguished researcher, and former Minister of Health.

It was truly heart-warming to see his legacy recognised at such a high level, far beyond the borders of his native Cameroon.
