Here's the 7th entry of our Safe Space mental health contest 🎉🎉
An essay from Evy
Titled:
"Breaking the Silence; Creating a safe space for women empowerment"

I'm not a feminist, I'm just an activist. Women's plight I stand for, Gender based violence I fight against.
A fight already strong and future imposing women have been fragilised, stigmatised and silenced. How did we get there?
Can we step up the game?
Of course we can!
A safe space for all, is all it takes.

Together we can stop these societal imposed mental health traumas that has dealt with generations of women. Families are torn apart, school drop outs are increasing, unwanted pregnancies and child abuse insanely seem normal.
In**st is the order of the day.
How did we get there?
Of course we can stop all these. Let's take action because Yes, we can.

When equality is showcased over equity,
When bridges of impossibility are burnt down,
When dialogue and communication are encouraged,
When community mental health care is prioritized,
Believe me, a better and safer place would be created.

Lives would be saved.
Women, mothers, girls, sisters would be saved.
Together let's promote a safe environment.
Because, of course, Yes We Can!

We have a 6th entry to our Safe Space mental health contest 🎉🎉🎉🎉
A Poem from Komguem Rosalie

Titled: Unspoken Words
Unspoken Words

In streets where shadows dance and play,
Words cut deep, a silent sway,
Girls walk tall, with hearts aflame,
As whispers sting, and shame's to claim.

Their smiles hide the pain they bear,
As strangers' words leave scars so rare,
They feel unsafe, belittled, and small,
Blaming themselves, losing it all.

Their minds a maze of anxious thoughts,
As whispers echo, long after the words are caught.
The weight of words, a heavy heart,
A soul that's weary, torn apart.

But who can hear their silent cry?
Who can see the tears they try to dry?
Their voices muffled, their hearts on fire,
As they suffer, their souls aspire.

Yet, there's power in every voice,
A chance to rise, to make a choice,
To speak up, to say no, to stand tall,
To report the words that make them fall.

But healing's possible, a journey to take,
With support and love, they'll rise above the ache.
Let's break the chains that bind their might,
Let's stand with them, and hold them tight.

Let's create a world where mental health matters,
Where words uplift, and love scatters.
Let's create a world where they can thrive,
Where words heal, and respect survives.

So let's listen, let's hear their plight,
Let's stand together, day and night,
For every girl, for every voice,
Let's create a world where they rejoice.

An essay by Wirngo

Titled: The unspoken voice

Trauma doesn't tell a story; it tells a secret. For people living with Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), this secret is not stored in neat
linear files of narrative memory. It is buried deeper—a live wire in the
nervous system, a sensory bomb of images, and fear. Asking a survivor
to translate this chaos into words is not just difficult; it can be a
re-traumatizing act of confrontation. While talk therapy has its place,
we must recognize a more fundamental, less invasive path to healing:
the language of art. Artistic expression is not merely a supplement to
conversation; it is often a superior alternative for initial trauma
processing, offering a direct conduit to the unspoken self.
The limitation of talk therapy lies in the very neurology of trauma.
During overwhelming stress, the speech Centre of the brain can shut
down. Memory is then stored as pure feeling and sensation, not words.
Trying to force a story out can make a person feel trapped and scared
all over again. It can make them feel broken, as if they are failing at
therapy.
Art however, speaks a different language. It doesn't need words. By
painting or drawing, one can express feelings that are too big or too
complicated to name. The shaky line of drawing can show anxiety. The
bold smash of paint can show anger. Careful creation can show the
beginning of healing. This isn't about being a good artist. It is about
letting the inside out, safely.
Most importantly, art gives back control. Trauma is defined by a loss of
control—a power taken away. In the artistic process, every choice is an act of reclamation. The selection of a color, the decision to layer paint,
the power to tear a drawing and start anew are all micro-affirmations
of control. The trauma narrative becomes a dynamic, externalized
object that can be observed, manipulated, and even transformed. The
healing occurs not in the description of the wound, but in the active,
empowered process of tending to it.
This isn't to say that talking has no value. But for a heart silenced by
trauma, art is the first and most important voice. It is a quiet powerful
way to begin the journey back to oneself. By picking up a brush, we stop
demanding answers and start offering an opening. We make space for
the unspoken to finally be heard.

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life”

We have a 3rd submission for our Safe Space mental health contest 🎉🎉🎉
A Poem by Sonnita T. Betie

Titled:STORIES WE TELL

There were sounds,
Which did go round.
I heard voices: twasn't sure th' feeling,
Then 'ere was wailing.

Th' cries of babies no longer sounded for hunger,
But for th' uncertainty of th' next hour.
I saw bodies scattered here and 'ere,
But no one dared to bare, cuz of th' fear.

Th' joys of yesterday,
Have today b'come th' memories for today.
We'now live the stories we once read,
And so will the next generation thread.

We come today as one,
We join to find in us a home.
A place where we feel for each of us,
Today we stand above the thrust.

We tell our stories not to cry,
But cuz in it we find strength.
In this we find a reason to fly.
Yes! In this we won't relent.

On World Mental Health Day 2025 the official theme is “Access to services — Mental health in catastrophes & emergencies.” Disasters and conflicts take a huge toll on wellbeing; mental health must be part of the emergency response. Globally nearly 1 in 7 people live with a mental disorder (anxiety and depression are the most common), and in the African region tens of millions are affected — yet many in low-income settings do not receive care (estimates suggest up to 85% receive no treatment). In Cameroon the WHO Mental Health Atlas and country profiles highlight continued workforce and facility gaps that limit access to care.

At Safe Space our Q4 theme is Sustaining mental health support networks — because services are only as strong as the networks that keep them running through crises. This means: training community volunteers in psychological first aid, building referral links to clinics, keeping peer-support circles active during emergencies, and advocating for accessible services across Yaoundé and beyond.

Today we honour everyone doing the hard, quiet work — especially our Safe Space team. THANK YOU for showing up, for listening, for building bridges when people need them most. Want to help? Share this post, check in on someone, or message us to find out how to join our volunteer training.

We just got the first submission for the Safe Space Mental health contest 🎉🎉🎉

A poem from Tancha Raissa Anambobi Titled 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐫

🩵Poem description:

The poem "The Quiet War" explores the silent struggle of drug addiction and its deep impact on mental health. It portrays addiction not as a moral failure, but as a battle within a cry for peace, healing, and understanding. Through pain, awareness, and hope, the poem reminds us that recovery is possible when compassion replaces judgment, and when we learn to listen to the stories behind the silence.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐫

In a crowded room they stand alone,
A fragile heart wrapped round with stone.
Eyes once bright now dim with pain,
Dreams dissolve like drops in rain.

It started small, a way to cope,
A fleeting spark, a thread of hope.
One pill, one drag, one whispered lie:
"I’m fine," they said, "just let me try."

But laughter faded, voices stilled,
The mind grew dark, the silence filled.
A gentle soul began to fall,
Trapped behind addiction’s wall.

It isn’t just the trembling hand,
But the mind that sinks in shifting sand.
The battle rages deep inside,
Where fear and sorrow often hide.

Yet even storms will one day cease,
And broken hearts can find their peace.
For healing blooms in shattered ground,
When love and kindness gather round.

So listen close to those who ache,
Their tears are real, their hearts can break.
Each life, each mind, deserves to mend,
With hope, with help, with a friend.
