Earlier in September, JLL has organized their annual Diversity & Inclusion week in order to promote diverse workforce and inclusive work culture. As part of the series of events, they invited one of their employees, Marion, to share her experience throughout her journey with breast cancer.
Dr. Tibor Kovacs, Chief of Breast Surgery at Jiahui Health and Marion’s treating breast surgeon was also invited to the group discussion session.
During the patient-doctor interview lots of questions were asked and answered about breast cancer itself, prevention, screening, healthy lifestyle, psychological effects, treatment options and recovery.
Marion shared the story about how she felt when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, during the different stages of treatment, and how she managed to get back to her normal life following surgery. She highlighted how important it was to keep loving herself, stay joyful and not letting cancer defining her. She also mentioned how support from her close friends, acquaintances and work colleagues helped her both, physically and mentally.
Dr. Kovacs emphasized on the importance of good and personal level of communication and building a human link between doctor and patient. “Doctors should be empathetic and try putting themselves in the patient’s shoes. Treatment should be decided together with the patient and based on mutual agreement” - he said.
The audience also had the opportunity to participate and ask questions. The group discussed about cancer in general and breast cancer in more detail. For the question about how breast cancer care works at Shanghai Jiahui Breast Institute 上海嘉会国际医院乳腺门诊, Dr. Kovacs explained that they follow the European and US model by running the patient friendly One-Stop clinic service, practicing the MDT (multi-disciplinary team) approach, and having comprehensive cancer treatment available on site, including cancer and reconstructive surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. He raised awareness of the importance of regular self-examination and 1-2 yearly specialist breast cancer screening.
At the end of the event Marion shared about her participation in cancer patient support groups and how she is trying to help other ladies who have similar problems. She said: “We are like sisters, holding hands. We know how to talk to each other, what words to use. We are in different boats but on the same journey. Remember that you are not alone.”
