In 2012, Hodnett et al. published an updated Cochrane review on the use of continuous support for women during childbirth based on trials including more than 15,000 women. The study revealed that when continuous labor support was provided by a doula, women experienced a:
31% decrease in the use of Pitocin*
28% decrease in the risk of C-section*
12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth*
9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
14% decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery
34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience*

For most of these outcomes (marked with *) the best results occurred when woman had continuous labor support from a doula– someone who was NOT a staff member at the hospital and who was NOT part of the woman’s social network.

Yay for Doulas!

"Published data indicate that one of the most effective tools to improve labor and delivery outcomes is the continuous presence of support personnel, such as a doula. A Cochrane meta-analysis of 12 trials and more than 15,000 women demonstrated that the presence of continuous one-on-one support during labor and delivery was associated with improved patient satisfaction and a statistically significant reduction in the rate of cesarean delivery. Given that there are no associated measurable harms, this resource is probably underutilized."

NEW! POSTPARTUM DOULA SERVICES!!

We believe that parenting a newborn with confidence and knowledge can present itself as a challenge. A postpartum doula is an extra set of hands for when you need them most, and a good doula will also teach you how to manage without her. A postpartum doula is different than a house cleaner (who helps a lot around the home) or baby nurse (who may have sole care of the baby)- a postpartum doula is there to provide hands-on help and instruction in newborn care.

A postpartum doula will also spend time listening and asking questions, offering emotional support to the mum and her family. She builds confidence in the parents by demonstrating newborn care and encouraging the parents in their capabilities of caring for their baby. She can teach skills like bathing, infant hygiene, infant wearing, reading infant cues and calming a crying baby. She offers evidence-based informational support, not just her opinion pertaining to newborn care issues. In addition she can help with light housework around the home so that you may concentrate on your new baby.

Shanghai Doula’s Postpartum Doulas are also Certified Lactation Education Counsellors, and are trained to assist you with all aspects of breastfeeding.

The primary goal as a postpartum doula is to work herself out of a job by empowering you, the parents, to take on the full responsibility of being new parents and embracing your evolving family.

Shanghai Doula is pleased to provide you with a range of Postpartum Doula Packages to best suit you:
