CHIEFTAINESS KAWAZA
Monday, 19th March, 2018.
Chieftainess Kawaza of the Chewa people in Katete district says over 360 girls who were not in school in her chiefdom have been taken back to school through the Nileleni Project that is being implemented by the Mandela Washington Fellow and World Vision. Speaking when officers from Mandela Washington Fellow and World Vision paid a courtesy call on her on Friday, Chieftainess Kawaza said out of the 360 girls, a total of 306 girls dropped out of school for various reasons while 54 were victims of early marriages.
She said many girls and boys in her area have gone back to school, adding that the situation has since changed for the better.
Stressing the need for educating a girl child in society, the Chieftainess said her Chiefdom is in the process of coming up with a Foundation that will help promote education and many other issues in the area. And speaking during the same occasion, an 18 year old girl, Malita Banda who was retrieved from an early marriage said education is the only real key to a person’s successful life. Malita narrated that she was married off by her parents so that they could raise money for their upkeep and to buy a Puma blanket. Meanwhile Evans Nsooka who is one of the Project implementers, said the aim of the Project is to send young girls back to school and that they have a target of sending 10 thousand girls back to school. Mr Nsooka disclosed that the Nileleni Project is being implemented in Katete district in Eastern province and Pemba district in Southern province. He further explained that the Project will run for one year and that so far the 22,000 Dollars U.S Embassy Funded Project has achieved a lot.

In response to the negative effects of global warming, ECHDP with support from the US Embassy is working with Community members in chipata District (In Chieftainess Mkanda's area) by implementing the Tisunge Sanga Program of which one of the projects involves constructing of firewood saving stoves as a way of reducing the cutting down of trees which contributes to climate change. As an organization, we intend to scale up this project to all other districts of Eastern province in order to create greater impact. At ECHDP, we believe in long term and impactful projects that respond to practical and real needs of our population.

We partnered with a local NGO, Eastern Community Health and Development Program (ECHDP) in Chipata to teach community members in Chieftains Mukanda’s Area how to construct firewood serving stoves to reduce the cutting down of trees for firewood and to protect the environment.
The smoke-free stoves use 50% less firewood compared to the usual 3 block fires used in rural communities. The project is working with the community to build 5000 stoves in kitchens and is reaching out to about 20 000 people in Chipata District with information on the environmental impact of cutting down trees.
