Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that we can develop due to insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows glucose (sugar) to enter our cells so it can be used as an energy source.
Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include a family history of diabetes, being overweight or obese, having a sedentary lifestyle, and the most important being a diet high in fat, especially animal products.
When we consume a diet high in fat, our muscles present a build-up of intramyocellular lipids which decrease insulin activity, causing us to have high levels of blood sugar (hypoglycemia) which can be dangerous for our arteries, nerves, kidneys, eyes, heart, etc.
Constituent parts of meat, dairy, and eggs that can contribute to the development of type 2 Diabetes include: Trans fatty acids, saturated fat, cholesterol, high concentrations of leucine, heme iron, sodium, nitrates, nitrites, nitrosamines, and glycotoxins.
It has been shown in scientific studies that transitioning to a whole food, plant-based diet, it is possible to reverse type 2 diabetes. This is not the case of everyone who does transition, however, after transitioning people do improve their quality of life, prevent sequelae such as blindness, neuropathic disease, amputation of limbs. Many people are able to reduce their insulin requirements or eliminate them altogether while preventing a myriad of other chronic diseases.
If you have type 2 diabetes, you might not need to be dependent on medications for the rest of your life. If you do not have diabetes, transitioning to a plant-based diet may prevent you from becoming diabetic.
