I recall nap time in kindergarten! What a lovely chance for kids to settle and relax, just like we do when in savasana (aka co**se pose). I’d guess it was a good tool for teachers as well, to observe and aid understanding of each child in this passive phase. The ability to calm the body and the nervous system can be a challenge for some (dare I say many?!), children and adults alike. If I could go back in time and teach yoga nidra to these kids as they nap, I’d love to witness the effect. ❤️

Nap Time in Kindergarten in the 1950s

The Importance of Nap Time

In the 1950s, nap time was a crucial part of the kindergarten experience. Educational philosophies of the time emphasized the importance of rest for young children to support their growth and development. A typical kindergarten schedule included a dedicated nap time, usually after lunch, when children would lie down on mats or cots brought from home or provided by the school.

Setting the Scene

Classrooms were often arranged with mats or small cots spaced evenly apart, ensuring each child had a comfortable and personal space to rest. Teachers would dim the lights and create a calm, quiet environment conducive to relaxation and sleep. The atmosphere was one of tranquility, designed to help children recharge for the remainder of the school day.

Music for Nap Time

Music played a significant role in setting the tone for nap time. In the 1950s, the selections often included soft, soothing melodies to help children drift off to sleep. Here are some types of music and specific examples that might have been played during nap time:

1. **Classical Music:** Pieces like Claude Debussy's "Clair de Lune" or Ludwig van Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" were popular choices. The gentle and flowing melodies of these compositions created a peaceful ambiance.

2. **Lullabies:** Traditional lullabies such as "Brahms' Lullaby" or "Hush, Little Baby" were common. These songs had been used for generations to soothe children to sleep and were a staple in many households and classrooms.

3. **Nature Sounds:** Some teachers might have used recordings of nature sounds, like the gentle flow of a stream or the soft rustling of leaves. These sounds were believed to have a calming effect, helping children relax and feel at ease.

4. **Popular Music:** Occasionally, more contemporary tunes from the 1950s that had a soothing quality might be used. Songs like Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa" or Bing Crosby's "Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral (That's an Irish Lullaby)" provided a comforting and familiar backdrop for nap time.

The Experience

For many children, nap time was a cherished part of their day. It offered a moment of respite and a break from the structured activities and learning. Teachers played a crucial role in ensuring that this time was both restful and beneficial. They often walked softly around the room, gently patting a back or offering a comforting word to any child struggling to settle down.

In summary, nap time in the 1950s was more than just a break; it was an essential component of early childhood education. The careful selection of music and the nurturing environment created by teachers contributed to a restful and rejuvenating experience for young children, laying the foundation for a productive and enjoyable school day.

On my recent trip to Costa Rica, I went through all my swimsuits to see what fit and wound up feeling rather disappointed. As a teen and through my 40s, I was very slender and mostly not concerned about my weight or shape. Even then, though, I valued my thinness as a prize that really had nothing to...

The first few days of a retreat are so eye-opening for everyone! Rio Chirripo Lodge is lush with foliage and flowers, each of the rooms has special touches like handcrafted headboards or embroidered linens, and the cuisine is so fresh and healthy and abundant it’s barely believable. We all wandered around, eyes open and spinning in circles to take it all in. Meeting Roger and the staff at Rio is always a gift, and in our third year here we were delighted to see the same smiling faces to greet us! The yoga studio on the hill was worth the climb up, like going to a temple, and our discussions around Ahimsa/non-violence brought forth so many dimensions of how we can live more peacefully with ourselves and with everything and everyone around us. The ages in the group spanned the mid 20s to the early 80s, making this diverse group enlightening with its varied viewpoints and shared wisdom.🌸🦋

In this setting, surrounded by people, eager to connect and get to know each other, conversations can be profound. This group was no exception. When the body becomes relaxed, through yoga, or simply being outside in nature, the mind responds with openness and vulnerability. When people shared difficult scenarios of how they had been violent toward others, or others have been violent toward them, the group gave them the space to share their difficult stories, without rushing in to comfort them, or trying to give them answers, or telling them what they “should” do. It was a space of thoughtfulness and respect right from the beginning, and I knew we had gathered a very special group.❤️🙏🏻

On retreat in Costa Rica, keeping social media at a distance until this morning. Loved seeing this. It very much resonates with our study of the Yamas. These complications can cause us to be violent toward each other (not practicing ahimsa/nonviolence), they can cause us to steal time from others with our unending worry and focus on these complications (not remembering asteya/ non stealing), and perhaps making us look away from our own truth, stifling our potential and growth (not following satya/ truthfulness). But it is true that change, and complications are the goo of life. And they can be catalysts instead of obstacles if we let them❤️ We haven’t discussed Brahmacarya/ non excess or Aparigraha/ non grasping yet, but I’m certain this will apply to these ethical principles as well.
Namaste🙏🏻
