IN PROCESS: ORIGINAL ART: HOWLER CROSSING
The Salve Monos Drumming Circle Fundraiser is tomorrow, Wednesday January 28th, and Kech is finishing up a painting that will be included in the silent auction. This is a favorite community event each year, a lot of fun, and it funds the incredible work of the Salve Monos team, who go above and beyond to care for our local wildlife. It’s free admission, so come and enjoy the fun. Several of our yoga instructors, event leaders, and healing practitioners have donated to the silent auction, and I hear there are many other items up for bid, so there are lots of opportunities to show your support between these, the merch, and the live auction for the painting that Pau Riveros will bring to life amidst the drumming. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Slow Flow should feel like an extended morning stretch, opening up the body in a gentle way, an intuitive realignment and reset to begin the day. The class includes light Vinyasa, flowing through postures with care; breathing exercise to rebalance the nervous system; and restorative poses for deep relaxation and release, soothing away stress and enhancing mood and vigor. Slow Flow aims to nurture the mind and body, to move in ways that feel good as we practice, and support us in feeling better beyond the mat. This is an accessible class for all students. GaĂ«lle will offer adjustments and honor participants’ choice whether to receive them; please communicate clearly your preferences. Bring a mat, towel, and water.

We’ve got two new classes lined up for Tuesdays and Thursdays in February. GaĂ«lle is teaching a morning Slow Flow to awaken the body and center the mind to start the day with renewed energy, and Adriana is leading Barre Fitness in the evenings for a low-impact full workout to end the day in a powerful way and rest well at night. Our other yoga classes continue–Monday and Wednesday evenings Vinyasa Yoga and Sound Healing with GaĂ«lle, Wednesday mornings Yoga for Clarity and Calm with Sarah, and Friday mornings Vinyasa Flow with Taylor. Taylor’s visit to Coco will come to an end in February, so get into class with her while you can. It’s been great having her back, and we’re glad she’ll be teaching a few more classes yet. We’ll miss her uplifting energy when it’s time to go, but we’re grateful to keep the Vinyasa group going with Sarah stepping in to lead starting February 27th.

These sessions offer an hour of dynamic Vinyasa Yoga centered around Sun Salutations and standing postures. These are active sequences applying effort to overcome any inertia, and move our bodies in new ways to regenerate our inner momentum. This class is intended for participants of all levels, and to ensure that all students may practice as appropriate for their particular capacities and limits, GaĂ«lle will explain variations and offer personalized guidance. While GaĂ«lle does incorporate hands-on adjustments, know that these are optional and communicate if you’d prefer not to receive them. After our time building up our energies and synching our movements with the breath, we will find rest in an extended half-hour savasana. As we settle into stillness, GaĂ«lle will play singing bowls, bells, rattles, and other instruments, creating a coherent soundscape to organize our energy field and support the subtle shifts ignited in our practice.

Inspired by ballet exercises and functional fitness training, these Barre workouts integrate coordination, balance, and breath with precise low-impact movements to build strength, stability, and endurance, and to develop body awareness and control. The routines target all areas, working arms, legs, core, and glutes to promote long, strong muscle while improving mobility, alignment, and posture. The constant conscious movement, which challenges the body without overload, supports hormonal balance, regulating stress and reducing cortisol. The sessions flow with intention and focus, creating a supportive environment that invites us to connect with our bodies, cultivate presence, and feel empowered in nurturing our wellbeing. Classes follow a clear structure–warm-up, main routine, and cool-down–with the strong beat of electronic music marking the rhythm and keeping our energy up. All levels are welcome; Adriana will guide modifications and progressions so that each person can be safe and confident no matter their abilities or needs. Classes may incorporate weights, resistance bands, exercise balls or sliders to support muscle activation and control while maintaining fluid movement. Participants may be barefoot or wear socks; please bring a mat for certain floor exercises.

While most local menus show no mention of tofu, Red Panda is serving it eight different ways. For vegans in search of Asian flavors, both classic dishes and street-style food are offered, plus poke bowls and bubble teas. We’re glad for Red Panda adding variety to the local fare.

Satsang refers to a gathering of like-minded seekers engaging in discourse to deepen spiritual understanding and awaken to our true being. We will sit in a circle so that we may see everyone, and everyone will be encouraged to participate. Vanessa will open introducing the theme and speaking to how the concepts are described and approached in yogic philosophy, then she will guide the discussion, at times posing questions to the group, and also responding to the thoughts and uncertainties that arise, from her perspective rooted in the wisdom of Ashtanga Yoga. For those unfamiliar with yoga, these themes are universal spiritual teachings and can be applied with any faith or non-secular life. In the Yoga Sutras written in the third century BC, Patanjali explains the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga—in Sanskrit ‘astan’ (eight) and ‘anga’ (limb)—as a practical and holistic guide to spiritual growth. The eight limbs are: Yama (ethics), Niyama (observances), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (bliss/union). Our satsang will convene each month to explore new topics, this year dedicated to considering the Yamas and Niyamas, and how these principles guide our everyday life in a broad and comprehensive way such that our practice is present in every experience. For February we will discuss Satya (truthfulness), another Yama, related to the idea of following your heart. In Satsang we aim to clarify our own comprehension, and also to create a field of awareness in our group, which will ripple out into the community generating waves of rising vibration.

Some mats, cushions, and chairs are available in the space; please bring what you need to sit comfortably. As we form our circle each person is invited to place flowers and an item on the center altar to imbue the space with our own intentions and energies, and also so that the item may be charged with the field of consciousness we create as a group in our discourse. Remember to bring flowers and/or a small personal item for the altar, as well as water and a pen and journal if you like.

These sessions combine acoustic instruments with subtle binaural tones to support the nervous system and guide the brain toward states of calm, focus, and deep rest. The soundscapes designed with care around the resonance and vibration of the handpan, encourage any stress to melt away, the breath to slow, and the mind to clear and still. Generally these sessions are experienced lying down to allow the body to relax entirely, but they may be done seated if needed, finding the most comfortable position to feel supported, safe, and at ease. While these sessions may evoke a release of held emotions, or illicit vivid inner imagery, ultimately they will induce a state of deep restorative rest. Following a therapeutic sound session, people express feeling calm, clear-headed, emotionally balanced, and rejuvenated, some reporting improved sleep, reduced stress, and a stronger sense of inner connection. Sessions last between 60 and 75 minutes, depending on the format and the needs of the participant. $70 or $80 with Reiki. Contact Oscar to book. +506 6148 6437

If you’d like to learn Reiki Energy Healing, whether to use it for yourself, to share with friends and family, or to apply professionally, please reach out. If we can get a group together, we can schedule a Level I training, two 4-hour sessions. We’ll practice sensing energy, cover the principles, precepts, and traditional story, complete the attunement, and practice offering Reiki to ourselves and others. Many people don’t know that Reiki may be applied in other ways beyond healing–once you develop a strong connection with the energy, Reiki can help you find lost items, guide your yoga practice, or support you in moving through stressful situations with ease. For me, finding Reiki changed my life entirely, my perceptions of reality, and my sense of self-empowerment. It’s a part of my everyday life, and I love to share it with others. Be in touch if you’d like to learn; message or +506 8605 9477 🙏 Teagan

Writing is healing. Writing brings our feelings and ideas to the forefront of our awareness, and writing unpacks or unravels whatever we’ve been holding inside. Our journal circle will begin with time to settle into our space, then Sarah will facilitate a guided meditation or mindfulness exercise to tap into the writer within. She will offer guidance and provide prompts for us to put pen to paper, but we are free to follow our own thoughts without any particular aim. Often we may be surprised with where our writing leads us.

Writing fosters connection. We will end each journal circle with time to share. While there is no pressure to share, our intention is to create a safe container for us to write and share in community, to support and hold each other through whatever comes up in our journaling. This circle is open to anyone seeking connection, reflection, and clarity. We hope to bring a group together on a monthly basis, each month centered around a different theme or topic. This month we will explore parts of our inner world that may go unnoticed or unspoken, directing awareness to hidden or unconscious aspects of the self. With compassion, our writing will illuminate the shadow side within.

Coco Yoga & Wellness: Our Story

Coco Yoga & Wellness began in July 2018 when Teagan Patell de Valverde (Impulso Sano Yoga & Wellness Center) and Miranda Abbott-Wittman (My Yoga with Miranda), with the support of their respective husbands Kendall "Kech" Valverde and Joshua Wittman, combined forces to offer yoga, dance, arts, and therapeutic bodywork in the Playas del Coco Community. After partnering for six months at the My Yoga with Miranda studio space, Coco Yoga & Wellness launched officially in January 2019. After another eleven months of valuable teamwork supporting each other, learning from one another, and synergizing their offerings, the partnership dissolved in November 2019 with Miranda and Joshua's shifting focus to family and furthering Ninos del Sol Eco School. Teagan and Kendall continue to operate Coco Yoga & Wellness, but felt called to close the Plaza Nino rented studio location after January 2020 to follow their hearts and give their all to create a new beachfront yoga shala. Although there is sadness in closing this community center for now, we are fortunate that so many others in Playas del Coco and the surrounding areas continue with classes and offerings for our community to join together around yoga, arts, health, and wellness. We are grateful for this opportunity to align with our passion project propelling this exciting time of transition and growth, and we look forward to what's ahead on the horizon and what beauty will unfold. In response to Michelle Cassandra Johnson's open invitation to radicalize yoga to create a just world, Teagan has been developing the Yamas and Niyamas Activism Model, which she began sharing in June 2020 and will continue to share into early August. She hopes that this model will take root and be incorporated into common teaching around practical application of yoga philosophy for social activism. As Teagan and Kendall are expecting their first child at the end of August, they will be retreating from public work to dedicate their energies to family, and direct their efforts to creating the new yoga shala.
