We need people. We need human connection.
If you have moved to a new country you’d probably know that it takes time to meet awesome beings and feel like you belong.
The first days and weeks feels like the greatest disconnection - lost in time (jet lag) & space with little guidance.
Although I had few connections in Costa Rica, I felt lost and was missing my community in Bali and family in Spain. So in order to protect myself and feel safe, I started wearing extra layers in my usual space suit.
We are all born with beautiful open spirits but we start covering ourselves with a space suit that help us navigate our lives, identify with things and find protection.
We become identified with our skill in problem-solving or communicating; identified with our jobs and friends; identified with judgments and obsessions; identified with our anxiety and anger. We think we are the space suit.
These extra layers of protection I created, only helped for more separation and more difficulty to recognise the light in others.
There is an old saying that bringing Buddhism to a new culture is like bringing a flower and a rock together. The flower represents the potential for compassion, clarity, joy and wisdom to blossom in our life. The rock represents the solidity of a bewildered mind. If we want the flower to root and grow, we have to work to create the right conditions. *The way to do this is to soften up our hearts, our minds, our lives.*
I am so lucky for the endless network of human connections in this magical land. They have seen my light, despite my space suit, and so I have seen theirs. Tara Brach calls it, ‘Soul Recognition’.
Thank you Puerto Viejo for being the base of my transition as I land and anchor in Costa Rica & to the great encounters for helping me to come back Home.
Pura Vida!
