- All smiles for some Oral Health data analysis! 😁😁
Two weeks ago, one of our summer practicum students, Agnes Premkumar, along with student intern Nkazi Nchinda, delivered an awesome presentation analyzing data from Hands for Health dental clinics. These clinics are orchestrated by CISG collaborator and Director of Oral Health in the Brunca Region Gustavo Bermúdez Mora (we call him Tavo)! Agnes and Nkazi analyzed patient data so that Tavo could gauge the success of the volunteer dental clinics he orchestrates for vulnerable communities in the South of Costa Rica. The students also developed an Excel template so that Tavo can more easily analyze data in the future.
Interested in learning more about Tavo’s work? Well, the magazine “Dental World” has a wonderful article about it. Follow “Hands 4 Health” on Facebook for more information!

All smiles when you love your work 😃
One of CISG’s summer practicum students, Aaron Mallett, is hard at work with his project - systematizing and evaluating a local organization called RECAFIS Corredores. He is pictured here with the coordinator, Luis, and in a meeting with the rest of the RECAFIS members. Aaron is originally from Ontario, Canada and is pursuing his Masters in Public Health at the University of Southern California and his Masters in Global Health Policy at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. You rock Aaron, we’re glad to be working with you! Stay tuned to meet Agnes, our other summer practicum student, tomorrow!

On the inside 😎
UT students visited the Legislative Assembly to learn how bills are proposed and passed into law. We were fortunate enough to observe a live assembly and ran into the President of the Congress, Carlos Ricardo Benavides Jiménez! A special thanks to our very own Andrea for putting together this remarkably insightful day!

It’s which means we are posting to salute the women that are transforming health care
Students from the University of Texas-Austin receive a tour of the Colegio de Enfermeras/os de Costa Rica. The tour was led by the president (we like the Spanish word “presidenta”) of the Colegio, MSc. María Griselda Ugalde Salazar. She is pictured in the second photo, along with Carolina Bolaños, the associate director of CISG, and Professor Christine Divin (to Caro’s left). The first photo shows the students admiring the portraits of past presidentas of the Colegio, most of whom were women. The visit was incredibly insightful and students learned about the crucial role nurses play in upholding the Costa Rican health care system.

Unlocking the Promotion Code 🤓
Nurse Practitioner and Masters in Nursing students from the University of Texas - Austin are hard at work in San José. Here, Luis Fernando, a Health Promoter and Instructor at the University of Costa Rica’s School of Public Health, chronicles the history of the Costa Rican health care system. Luis Fernando is a Health Promoter - a profession that he thinks is unique to Costa Rica and a testament to the emphasis the country places on promoting health rather than simply treating illness. His presentation is part of the “Global Health and the Role of Primary Care” course UT-Austin offers in conjunction with CISG!

Expanding the meaning of health 🌎
Today, USC students visited Playa Blanca to learn how climate change can affect human health. They learned about the novel approach of Planetary Health that helps understand how changes in our ecosystems are putting at risk the health of local populations (if you are curious ➡️https://planetaryhealthalliance.org)
In the first photo, Pablo Largaespada explains the importance of involving local community members in conservation efforts. These partnerships encourage communities to use their natural resources in a sustainable manner, meaning a win-win for all! Students also took a kayak tour to learn about different species of mangroves.
Fun fact: Mangroves can capture and store greenhouse gasses in the soil for millennia! @ Playa Blanca, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Palm trees 🌴 as far as the 👁 can see
This vast sea of palm trees is an African Palm plantation, one of many in the Southwest portion of Costa Rica. Students from USC were learning about why monoculture - the promotion of and dependence upon a singular crop - can prove harmful to biodiversity, local economies, and human health. For example, eliminating the myriad plant species that comprise primary forests in favor of palm plantations may also thin out the number of animal species in the area (which depend on various plants for a balanced diet). As a result, local mosquitos have no other animals to attack except humans. This makes humans more susceptible to mosquito-borne diseases like Malaria and Dengue. Scary, right?
