WHY DUE DATES ARE ONLY AN ESTIMATE AND NOT AN EXACT PREDICTION

Many pregnant women expect their baby to arrive exactly on their due date, but in reality, that date is only a guide. The due date is calculated as 40 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period, assuming a regular 28-day cycle and ovulation on day 14. But every woman’s body is different, and not everyone ovulates or conceives at the same time.

That’s why only about 1 in 20 women actually deliver on their exact due date. Most babies arrive anytime between 37 and 42 weeks, which is still considered normal and full term.

Even early ultrasound scans, though more accurate, can still miss the exact day by a few days or more. Your baby’s growth pattern, genetics, and individual development all play a role too.

So if your baby doesn’t come exactly when the calendar says, don’t worry. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Your baby will come when your body and your baby are both ready.

Keep attending your antenatal visits and follow your healthcare provider’s advice, especially as you get close to term.
