Foods to Avoid at Iftar
During Ramadan, iftar tables become richer and more abundant…
However, for couples undergoing IVF treatment, planning pregnancy, or struggling with infertility, certain foods may negatively affect hormonal balance and reproductive health.
Here’s what to be mindful of at iftar from a fertility perspective 👇
🍰 1️⃣ Excess Sugar and Syrup-Based Desserts
Syrup-based desserts can rapidly raise blood sugar levels.
This may:
Increase insulin resistance
Disrupt hormonal balance in women with PCOS
Affect ovulation patterns
In men, high sugar intake may negatively impact s***m quality.
👉 Limit dessert to 1–2 times per week, keep portions small, and choose milk-based desserts when possible.
🍟 2️⃣ Fried and High-Fat Foods
Heavy, greasy meals can:
Increase oxidative stress
Strain hormone metabolism
Lead to weight gain
Obesity can reduce both IVF success rates and natural conception chances.
👉 Opt for grilled, boiled, or baked cooking methods instead.
🥤 3️⃣ Sugary and Carbonated Drinks
Soft drinks and processed fruit juices:
Provide empty calories
Cause blood sugar fluctuations
May contribute to dehydration
During treatment, adequate hydration is essential for embryo development and a healthy uterine environment.
👉 Aim for at least 2–2.5 liters of water between iftar and suhoor.
🥖 4️⃣ White Bread and Refined Carbohydrates
Refined flour products are digested quickly and can cause sudden spikes in blood sugar.
This may negatively affect fertility, especially in women with insulin resistance.
👉 Choose whole-grain alternatives whenever possible.
☕ 5️⃣ Excessive Caffeine
High consumption of tea and coffee after iftar can:
Disrupt sleep patterns
Increase cortisol (the stress hormone) levels
Affect hormonal balance
It is recommended not to exceed 1 cup of coffee per day.
💛 Remember
IVF success begins not only in the laboratory, but also at the table.
