Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, 1940

Ένα από τα κύρια θέματα στα έργα της Frida Kahlo ήταν ο πόνος της. Και ο σωματικός αλλα και ο ψυχικός. Η Frida Kahlo μέχρι το 1940 όπου έκανε τον συγκεκριμένο πίνακα, είχε ήδη περάσει από μια σπάνια πάθηση της σπονδυλικής της στήλης, το γνωστό ατύχημα της, πάμπολες εγχειρήσεις και αποβολή βρέφους.

Η μακροχρόνια σχέση της με τα σωματικά και ψυχικά της βασανιστήρια παρουσιάζονται μέσα από το κολιέ από αγκάθια, υποδείχνοντας πως πλέον ο πόνος δεν είναι ένας καινούριος εχθρός αλλά ένας παλιός φίλος.

Στην απαθής της έκφραση βλέπουμε την υπομονή της αλλά και την θέληση της για τον θάνατο.

Η Frida πέθανε το 1954 και στα τελευταία της γράμματα έγραψε:
“Ελπίζω πως η έξοδος μου θα είναι χαρμόσυνη. Ελπίζω να μην επιστρέψω ποτέ”.
