Κήλη των αθλητών (Sportsman’s groin or sportsman’s hernia)
Sportsman’s groin or sportsman’s hernia, is a condition that is common in people who display intense athletic activity. It is not always associated with the presence of a hernia but often the two diseases coexist. This injury is usually a result of intense training.
The main symptom of sportsman’s groin is severe pain in the lower abdominal wall during sports activity, rotation or extension of the hip.
The diagnosis of Sportsman’s groin is made after a clinical examination of the patient and if necessary in combination with imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging.
The definitive treatment is surgery and based on studies the most successful method is the endoscopic TEP method which is performed through 3 incisions of 5-8 mm size using special laparoscopic tools. The area of the lower abdominal wall is strengthened by the placement of a mesh, while at the same time tiny tendon incisions are made using a special endoscopic balloon that help reduce inflammation in the area.
As with all minimally invasive procedures, recovery is extremely fast and strengthening and exercise begin in the first postoperative week.
