A big thank you to Cyprus for inviting us to be part of this year’s Wellness Camp held on 8–9 November in Ayia Napa, an inspiring event dedicated to promoting health, wellbeing and balance.
We were delighted to share our scientific work and the Biobank.cy CoE role in generating new knowledge that advances human health, supporting the prevention, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of diseases. It was truly rewarding to connect with the community and show how research can make a real difference in people’s lives.

Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στην για την πρόσκληση να συμμετάσχουμε στο φετινό Wellness Camp, στις 8 και 9 Νοεμβρίου στην Αγία Νάπα — μια ουσιαστική πρωτοβουλία αφιερωμένη στην υγεία, την ευεξία και την ισορροπία.
Είχαμε τη χαρά να παρουσιάσουμε την αποστολή και το ερευνητικό έργο του@biobank.cy_ με στόχο τη δημιουργία νέας γνώσης για τη βελτίωση της ανθρώπινης υγείας. Η συμμετοχή μας σε μια τόσο εμπνευσμένη και ανθρωποκεντρική εκδήλωση υπήρξε πραγματικά πολύτιμη εμπειρία.

The Cyprus Society of Human Genetics (CSHG) hosted its 10th International Conference on 31 October to 1 November 2025 at the Shiacolas Educational Center for Clinical Medicine at the Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου | University Of Cyprus and Biobank.cy CoE proudly served as co-organizer. Our team presented advances in precision medicine, kidney genetics, digital disease modeling, and national genomics infrastructure, featuring Dr Apostolos Malatras on the CYPROME precision medicine platform, Dr Christoforos Odiatis on Alport syndrome therapeutic strategies, Dr Andrea Kakouri on developing digital kidney twins for rare diseases, and Prof. Constantinos Deltas on translating kidney genetics from discovery to pre-clinical research.
The scientific program spanned cancer and rare-disease genomics, reproductive genetics, advanced sequencing and multi-omics, federated data frameworks, and AI-driven digital-twin models, with keynote lectures from Prof. Konstantinos Stratakis and Prof. André Uitterlinden, who presented the Genome of Europe initiative in which biobank.cy participates as the sole genome data generator for Cyprus, strengthening national capacity in population-scale genomics and precision medicine.
We thank CSHG and all participants for their contributions and commitment to advancing human genetics in Cyprus.

Η Εταιρεία Ανθρώπινης Γενετικής Κύπρου (ΕΑΓΕΚ) Cyprus Society of Human Genetics διοργάνωσε το 10ο Διεθνές Συνέδριό της στις 31/10-01/11 2025 στο Σιακόλειο Εκπαιδευτικό Κέντρο Κλινικής Ιατρικής στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου | University Of Cyprus, με το Biobank.cy να συμβάλλει ως συνδιοργανωτής. Η ομάδα μας παρουσίασε εξελίξεις στην ιατρική ακριβείας, τη γενετική νεφρικών νοσημάτων, τα ψηφιακά μοντέλα νόσου και τις εθνικές υποδομές γονιδιωματικής. Οι παρουσιάσεις περιλάμβαναν τον Δρ Απόστολο Μαλατρά για την πλατφόρμα CYPROME, τον Δρ Χριστόφορο Οδιάτη για θεραπευτικές προσεγγίσεις στο σύνδρομο Alport, τη Δρ Άντρεα Κακουρή για την τεχνολογία προσομοίωσης του μικροπεριβάλλοντος του νεφρικού σωληναρίου σε σπάνιες νόσους και τον Καθ. Constantinos Deltas για μεταφραστική έρευνα στο σύνδρομο Alport στην Κύπρο τα τελευταία 25 χρόνια.
Το επιστημονικό πρόγραμμα κάλυψε τη γονιδιωματική καρκίνου και σπάνιων νοσημάτων, την αναπαραγωγική γενετική, προηγμένες τεχνολογίες αλληλούχισης και πολυ-ομικές προσεγγίσεις, ομοσπονδιακές πλατφόρμες δεδομένων και εφαρμογές τεχνητής νοημοσύνης σε ψηφιακά μοντέλα οργάνων. Κεντρικές ομιλίες έδωσαν οι Καθ. Κωνσταντίνος Στρατάκης και Καθ. André Uitterlinden, ο οποίος παρουσίασε την πρωτοβουλία Genome of Europe όπου το biobank.cy συμμετέχει ως ο μοναδικός φορέας παραγωγής γονιδιωματικών δεδομένων για την Κύπρο, ενισχύοντας την εθνική ικανότητα στην πληθυσμιακή γονιδιωματική και την ιατρική ακριβείας.

Nanotechnology: A new ally in the fight against breast cancer

In her article on Madame Figaro Cyprus, published on the occasion of Breast Cancer Awareness Day, Dr. Yiota Gregoriou, Senior Scientist at the biobank.cy CoE, highlights the new insights that nanotechnology and research brings to the fight against breast cancer. She also shares a personal message: “In Cyprus, hundreds of new cases of breast cancer are recorded every year. There are no easy or immediate solutions. However, there is promising progress in research, thanks to scientists around the world who are working tirelessly toward this goal. As women scientists, we have a responsibility to contribute meaningfully to this effort. Science cannot promise miracles, but it can offer clarity and that may be the most powerful message we can share.”

Νανοτεχνολογία: Νέα ελπίδα στη μάχη κατά του καρκίνου του μαστού

Μέσα από το άρθρο της στο Madame Figaro Cyprus με αφορμή την Ημέρα Ευαισθητοποίησης κατά του Καρκίνου του Μαστού, η Δρ Γιώτα Γρηγορίου Ανώτερη Επιστήμονας στο Κέντρο Αριστείας biobank.cy, παρουσιάζει τα νέα δεδομένα που φέρνει η νανοτεχνολογία στη μάχη του καρκίνου του μαστού μεταφέροντας το δικό της μήνυμα: Στην Κύπρο, κάθε χρόνο καταγράφονται εκατοντάδες νέα περιστατικά καρκίνου του μαστού. Δεν υπάρχουν εύκολες ούτε και άμεσες λύσεις. Υπάρχει όμως ελπιδοφόρα πρόοδος στην έρευνα. Μια πρόοδος που οφείλεται στους επιστήμονες ανά τον κόσμο, οι οποίοι εργάζονται ασταμάτητα για την επίτευξη του στόχου αυτού. Ως γυναίκες επιστήμονες έχουμε την ευθύνη να συμβάλλουμε ουσιαστικά σε αυτή την πορεία. Αν και η επιστήμη δεν υπόσχεται θαύματα μπορεί να προσφέρει σαφήνεια και αυτό ίσως να είναι και το πιο δυνατό μήνυμα που μπορούμε να δώσουμε.

Inauguration of the New Cyprus Blood Centre in Yeri

biobank.cy CoE attended the inauguration ceremony of the new Κέντρο Αίματος Κύπρου/Αιμοδοσία-Cyprus Blood Establishment/Blood Donation in Yeri, held in the presence of the Minister of Health, Mr. Μιχάλης Δαμιανός - Michael Damianos and the Mayor of Latsia, Mr. Christos Pittaras.

The establishment of this state-of-the-art Centre represents a significant milestone in strengthening blood donation services and enhancing healthcare infrastructure across Cyprus.

As a research institution dedicated to advancing science and public health, our Centre actively supports initiatives that promote collaboration between the scientific community and the healthcare sector.

We would like to thank Ms. Androulla Panagiotou, Head of the Blood Center, for the invitation.

Εγκαίνια του νέου Κέντρου Αίματος στο Γέρι

Το Κέντρο Αριστείας biobank.cy έδωσε το παρών της στα εγκαίνια του νέου Κέντρο Αίματος Κύπρου/Αιμοδοσία-Cyprus Blood Establishment/Blood Donation, που πραγματοποιήθηκαν παρουσία του Υπουργού Υγείας, κ. Μιχάλης Δαμιανός - Michael Damianos και του Δημάρχου Λατσιών, κ. Χρίστου Πιτταρά.

Η ίδρυση του νέου Κέντρου αποτελεί ένα ακόμη σημαντικό βήμα για την ενίσχυση των υπηρεσιών αιμοδοσίας και τη βελτίωση των υποδομών υγείας στην Κύπρο.

Το Κέντρο μας στηρίζει δράσεις που ενισχύουν τη συνεργασία μεταξύ της επιστημονικής κοινότητας και του τομέα της δημόσιας υγείας.

The Center of Excellence biobank.cy was represented at the 2nd Seminar on Updates in Kidney Transplantation, held on October 18, 2025, in Nicosia. The event was organized by Dr. Andreas Soloukides, Head of the Transplant Clinic at Nicosia General Hospital, in collaboration with the Department of Education of the Οργανισμός Κρατικών Υπηρεσιών Υγείας - ΟΚΥπΥ .

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Constantinos Deltas , Honorary Member of the biobank.cy Council, presented a comprehensive overview of a 25-year research journey in genetics as applied to nephrology and kidney transplantation. His lecture highlighted the contributions of the Cypriot research community since 2020 in advancing knowledge in genetic and molecular pathways linked to kidney disease progression.

Professor also presented compelling preclinical data on the use of repurposed therapies for Alport syndrome, a rare hereditary kidney disorder. Preclinical studies in mouse models demonstrated promising results, paving the way for future clinical trials aimed at developing effective treatments for patients.
Our Center continues to play a pivotal role in translational research, bridging laboratory discoveries with clinical application to address pressing challenges in nephrology and transplantation medicine.

🌍 The biobank.cy Center of Excellence proudly participated in the 4th Teaming Club Conference, held in Porto, Portugal from 15–17 October, advancing EU collaborations for sustainability!

The event gathered 48 Centers of Excellence from 14 countries, all established or strengthened under the EU’s Teaming programme. It was a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange, strategic networking, and science-driven entrepreneurship, all in pursuit of long-term sustainability and innovation.

Our Center was represented by Marina Constantinou, Operations Manager, Dr. Mariel Voutounou Project Manager and Dr. Gregory Papagregoriou, Senior Scientist / Group Leader.

🌍Το Κέντρο Αριστείας biobank.cy συμμετείχε στο 4ο Συνέδριο Teaming Club, που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Πόρτο της Πορτογαλίας μεταξύ 15 και 17 Οκτωβρίου, ενισχύοντας τις προοπτικές ανάπτυξης στρατηγικών συνεργασιών με στόχο τη μακροπρόθεσμη βιωσιμότητα!

Dr. Alexis Kyriacou, Clinical and Diabetes Dietitian & Research Assistant in the Field of Nutrition at biobank.cy CoE, participated in the 8th Conference on Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, organized by the Endocrine Society of Cyprus with the Παιδιατρική Εταιρεία Κύπρου, held on October 11–12, 2025, in Ayia Napa.

Dr. Kyriacou delivered a compelling presentation on “Obesity: Dietetic Management”, showcasing evidence-based nutritional strategies for treating obesity and their impact on endocrine health.

🔬 At biobank.cy, we remain committed to advancing research in obesity and related metabolic disorders. Two major projects — BETTER4U and LifeEva — are currently underway in Cyprus, focusing on the biological and lifestyle determinants of obesity and promoting sustainable healthy living interventions.

Στην παρουσίασή του με θέμα «Παχυσαρκία: Διαιτολογική Διαχείριση», ο Δρ Κυριάκου ανέδειξε τεκμηριωμένες διατροφικές παρεμβάσεις για την αντιμετώπιση της παχυσαρκίας και τη σύνδεσή τους με την ενδοκρινική υγεία.

Το Κέντρο μας βρίσκεται στην αιχμή της έρευνας για την πρόληψη της παχυσαρκίας και συναφών διαταραχών με δύο σημαντικά ερευνητικά έργα -BETTER4U και LifeEva - σε εξέλιξη.
