Foreign body removal from a 13 year old female!!!

The object (a hairpin) was ingested accidentally. It was followed up with series of abdominal x-rays that indicated passage to the large bowel. After a few days the child became symptomatic with abdominal pain and constipation. The object was retained in the sigmoid colon for 3 days.
After clinical evaluation an emergency sigmoidoscopy was performed and a hairpin was found lodged in the colon wall at sigmoid colon with surrounding ulcers and edema. The hairpin was dislodged with caution using several techniques and was extracted successfully with no complications.
It was noted that the hairpin was broken at one side, creating a sharp-pointed edge.
Sharp-pointed objects lodged in the gastrointestinal tract represent a medical emergency because of high risk of perforation and need urgent intervention.
