Loukas was born in 2009 with a congenital anomaly of the femur, a rare condition that affects the normal development, length, and alignment of the thigh bone. His hip, knee and ankle were also involved, making early specialist intervention essential. After medical consultations in Cyprus, it was decided that he would continue his treatment in the United States, where teams experienced in complex limb reconstruction could support his long-term care plan.

Between 2012-2025, Loukas underwent a structured series of orthopaedic procedures designed to correct deformities, improve joint function, and gradually lengthen the affected limb.

These procedures are part of internationally recognised treatment pathways for congenital femoral deficiency, aiming to restore alignment, support mobility and help children achieve the highest possible level of function.

Alongside surgery, Loukas completed extensive and physically demanding rehabilitation programmes both in Cyprus and in the USA. These programmes are critical in strengthening the muscles, supporting joint stability, and ensuring that each surgical stage leads to meaningful, long-term improvement.

Despite the pain, the long recovery periods, and the significant physical and emotional challenges, Loukas showed exceptional determination throughout his journey. He worked tirelessly with his medical teams and physiotherapists, overcoming every obstacle with resilience.

As we move into the colder months, respiratory illnesses like flu, COVID-19, and RSV become more common.
Here are some evidence-based tips to help you stay healthy all winter long.

1. Stay up to date with your vaccinations – vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself against serious illness. Ask your healthcare provider which vaccines you need.

2. Practice everyday prevention – wash your hands regularly with soap and water. When you’re sick, stay home to avoid spreading viruses.

3. Use masks wisely – wearing a mask (especially in crowded or indoor spaces) can reduce your risk of getting or spreading respiratory viruses.

4. Improve air quality and humidity indoors – good ventilation helps reduce the concentration of airborne viruses. Very dry air may increase the risk of viral spread.

5. Cover coughs and sneezes – use a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces (door handles, phones, countertops) regularly.

6. Know when to test and seek treatment – if you develop symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose), talk to your healthcare provider for advice and consider testing.

7. Take care of your overall health – stay physically active, eat a balanced diet, and get enough sleep – these help support your immune system.

Protect yourself and those around you.

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 – 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟰𝘁𝗵
On Friday, November 14th, we recognise World Diabetes Day, a global initiative that raises awareness about diabetes and its impact. This year’s theme, “Diabetes across life stages,” emphasises the importance of lifelong care, prevention and self-management, from childhood to older age.

There are three main types of diabetes:
𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝟭 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 usually develops in childhood or early adulthood and requires daily insulin treatment.
𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝟮 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 is more common in adults and is often linked to lifestyle factors such as excess weight and lack of physical activity. It can often be managed through diet, exercise and medication.
𝗚𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 occurs during pregnancy, and if untreated, can affect both mother and baby.

Being aware of diabetes at every stage of life can help with timely diagnosis and effective management. Common signs and symptoms include:
• Increased thirst and frequent hunger
• Frequent urination, especially at night
• Persistent fatigue and irritability
• Blurred vision
• Wounds that heal slowly or repeated infections

If you notice symptoms or have risk factors such as family history, obesity, or a sedentary lifestyle, consult your doctor. Early detection and integrated care are essential to prevent complications and maintain health at every stage of life.

Physiotherapy students from the University of Nicosia recently completed part of their Clinical Practice at our hospital, focusing on the rehabilitation of respiratory patients.

Under the guidance of their Clinical Physiotherapy Trainer - Ms Elena Papamichael, the students observed and discussed each patient case in detail, reviewing the therapeutic approaches applied, evaluating outcomes, and developing improvement plans for future sessions.

This hands-on learning experience as part of the University’s exchange student programme, offering valuable practical exposure within a real clinical environment.

Exchanging knowledge and practising real cases with real patients, ensures the quality and readiness of the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Keeping safety within our hospital is an important part of our daily routine.
As part of this commitment, we held an essential training session on fire extinguishers.

During the session, we learned about the different types of fire extinguishers and their appropriate use for various causes of fire. We also received instruction on the correct operational techniques and reviewed the locations of fire extinguishers throughout the hospital, ensuring that each one is clearly visible, easily accessible, and properly positioned.

At PMC, the safety of our patients and staff remains an absolute priority. Through regular and practical fire safety training, we ensure that our personnel are fully equipped with the knowledge and preparedness required, to respond effectively and responsibly in the event of a fire emergency.

We extend our thanks to Fire Formula Ltd and Mr. Costas Theodorou for providing this important training session.
