✈️ FOEDUS Organ Exchange — A Milestone for Cyprus

For the first time, through the FOEDUS European platform, our team at Nicosia General Hospital offered organs from a brain-dead donor to the European network.

The liver was accepted by the Warsaw Transplant Center in Poland, one of Europe’s largest and most active liver transplant units, performing around 400 liver transplants annually. Their team traveled to Cyprus, retrieved the liver, and returned with it on a domestic flight.

Meanwhile, our transplant team successfully retrieved the kidneys and performed two kidney transplants locally in Cyprus.

This achievement reflects European collaboration and solidarity in organ donation, ensuring that every possible opportunity to save lives is realized — across borders.

A heartfelt thank you to the donor and their family, and to all the coordinators, anesthetists, nurses, nephrologists, and surgical teams whose professionalism and dedication made this possible.

Work side by side with Dr. Michail Papoulas and Dr. Georgios Markides, two recognised leaders in abdominal surgical oncology.

💥 Another Surgical Milestone Achieved – Laparoscopically!

We recently performed a radical right nephrectomy on a patient with a tumour that had extended into the IVC (inferior vena cava).
This is one of the most challenging types of kidney cancer surgeries — and we did it entirely laparoscopically!

👏 Hats off to the amazing team of El Greco Medical Centre for achieving what very few centers in the world can do minimally invasively.
