Christmas traditions from around the world 🎄

Christmas celebrates joy, love, and traditions that vary from country to country. Some customs may be familiar to us, while others may be surprising. Let's look at how people celebrate Christmas around the world! 🌍

🇮🇹 Italy. She brings sweets to the good children and coal to the naughty ones.

🇯🇵 Japan: Christmas is not an official holiday, but the locals love to dine at KFC. Yes, fried chicken has become a Christmas hit, and reservations for the table are made weeks in advance!

🇮🇸 Iceland: 13 Yule Lads make Christmas merry here. Each one has a different personality - from the lovable gift bearer to the candle-stealing rogue.

🇲🇽 Mexico: People celebrate "Las Posadas," a nine-day celebration depicting the journey of Mary and Joseph. House to house, songs are sung, and shelter is sought.

🇨🇿 Czech Republic. The Golden Piglet, lead casting, apple slicing, and shell boat sail. Each custom has its meaning and brings a little magic to Christmas Eve.

🎬 How quickly can you prepare film dialogue in a foreign language?

Sometimes you have a week.
And sometimes you have... a weekend. 😅

Stillking Films approached us about filming the Netflix series Age of Innocence. The actors needed to master challenging Polish dialogue quickly.

What did we do?
🎧 We recorded voiceovers for two characters.
💬 Our colleague trained them in pronunciation online.
🎥 And on Friday, she came directly to the shoot in Průhonice to fine-tune everything on site.

The result?
The actors gave natural and believable performances, the dialogue was completed in record time, and the production team appreciated our Speed and professionalism.

It was a challenge. And that's exactly what we enjoy. ✨

For several years, we've been supporting Klub ŽAP. This organization helps women with breast cancer navigate one of the hardest chapters of life. They provide community, guidance, support, and small moments of joy that mean the world.

This year, we contributed again with a financial donation.
It's close to our hearts that women make up a large part of the Skrivanek team, and we know how important it is that no woman has to face this fight alone.

🎧 Remote Simultaneous Interpretation in November: Uniting Global Stakeholders in Equity, Innovation, and Impact

In November, Skrivanek's interpreters ensured inclusivity and accessibility across health, climate, gender equality, and digital innovation. They facilitated seamless conversations in various formats, from small-group sessions to global webinars.

We supported 27 international events for leading UN bodies and partner organizations, interpreting in 5 languages.

Here are some of the highlights:

🌱 UNDP
Our teams excelled in providing real-time language access at various events, including the SGP OP8 Inception Workshops and Blue and Green Islands, where we connected regional environmental goals with global sustainability initiatives.

We also contributed to technical webinars on AgriTech innovations and community approaches to HIV in Latin America. At the Climate, Peace, and Security community, our experts facilitated essential policy discussions in French and English.

Our PSEAH SOP session highlighted safeguarding with interpretation in English, French, and Spanish. We encouraged multilingual dialogue on urban agroecology, biodiversity, and digital farming, ensuring ideas are ready for real-world impact!

🟣 UN WOMEN
We are excited to share our progress in programming focused on gender, finance, and peacebuilding. In sessions such as "Sustainable Finance in UN Women's Programming in Africa" and the 25th anniversary of Resolution 1325, we provided real-time interpretation in French, English, and Spanish to facilitate clear discussion. Our interpreters also supported ACT Steering and Management Committee meetings, training on Direct Project Costing, and preparations for the 16 Days of Activism 2024, playing key roles in PRISM work plan sessions and discussions with Cigna Healthcare.

🧒 UNICEF
Our team made a significant impact by promoting health and nutrition with essential Salt Fortification Guidance and webinars on adolescent nutrition. Our WASH events, featuring Hand Hygiene Guidelines, fostered vibrant discussions among multilingual experts.

🌍 UNRISD – Social Protection
In sessions linking employment and social protection systems, we interpreted into English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic, bridging highly technical frameworks across stakeholder groups and regions.

💬 Panorama Global (Prevent GBV)
We supported a pivotal virtual advocacy event aimed at ending violence against women, focusing on survivor voices and policy responses worldwide.

🕒 Total interpreting time: Over 8 hours of remote simultaneous interpretation

Whether supporting early-stage policy planning or high-level UN advocacy efforts, our interpreters delivered not just words—but understanding, context, and inclusion.

What an event!
