One of the most overlooked pieces of fertility after 40 is the vaginal microbiome.

As hormones shift, we often see a decline in Lactobacillus. These are the protective bacteria that help maintain the right pH and support a healthy environment for implantation.

When this balance is disrupted, it can increase inflammation and make it more difficult for an embryo to implant and develop.

This isn’t something you typically feel or notice.

In my practice, about 9 out of 10 of my clients over 40 have some level of vaginal dysbiosis when we test (most without symptoms).

The good news is that this is something we can test for and improve with the right approach.

Fertility is not just about egg quality. It’s about the environment the embryo is entering.

A high-quality prenatal plays a critical role in supporting:

✨ Egg quality
✨ Hormone production
✨ A healthy pregnancy
✨ Postpartum recovery

If you’re trying to conceive, ideally start at least 3 months before and continue through pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Here’s what most women don’t realize:

Even high-quality prenatals often fall short on some key nutrients.

These are my top three:

✔ Needed
✔ Seeking Health
✔ WeNatal

Each one does a lot well…
but none of them are fully complete.

NEEDED
→ May need to add iron, depending on your levels

SEEKING HEALTH
→ May need to add iron (based on labs)
→ May need additional choline, depending on your diet

WE NATAL
→ May need to add magnesium, vitamin C, and vitamin E

And importantly—
none of these provide DHA/EPA, which is critical for fertility and pregnancy.

A prenatal is a foundation, not a complete plan.

What you actually need will depend on your body, your labs, and your diet.

“Everything looks normal.”

And for women over 40, it often gets simplified to:

“It’s just your age.”

But when we actually look deeper, it’s rarely that simple.

Here’s what I consistently see being missed:

✔ Low progesterone
✔ Blood sugar instability
✔ Thyroid dysfunction
✔ Low vitamin D
✔ Chronic inflammation
✔ Immune dysregulation
✔ Gut imbalances
✔ Vaginal microbiome health
✔ Toxin exposure
✔ Uterine environment
✔ Incomplete s***m testing

These are not small details.

They directly impact ovulation, egg quality, implantation, and miscarriage risk.

Unexplained infertility isn’t a true diagnosis.

It often means the right things haven’t been investigated.

And when you start addressing what’s actually going on…
things can change.

I conceived at 43 and 46.

And what I see over and over again is this:

Women are told it’s just their age.
And often, that’s where the conversation stops.

But that’s not how the body works.
Egg quality, ovulation, implantation, hormones—they’re all influenced by your internal environment.

And when you shift that environment, things can change.

This is what I focus on with my students and clients—

the factors that actually impact fertility, not just surface-level advice.

EMFs are a constant part of modern life.

And while they’re not the only factor, they are one of many inputs that can increase the overall stress load on the body.

When you’re trying to conceive (especially in your 40s) this matters.

Here’s what EMF exposure has been linked to:

✔ Lower s***m counts
✔ Hormonal disruption
✔ Increased inflammation
✔ Impaired implantation
✔ Higher miscarriage risk
✔ Sleep disruption
✔ Increased anxiety
✔ Changes in brain function
✔ Heart rhythm changes

The goal isn’t to eliminate everything. That’s not possible.

It’s to reduce your exposure where you can.

Start here:

✔ Don’t carry your phone on your body
✔ Keep your phone out of the bedroom
✔ Use speaker or wired headphones
✔ Turn off WiFi at night
✔ Choose wired over wireless when possible (minimize use of Bluetooth)

These are simple shifts, but they can make a meaningful difference over time.

When I was preparing my body to conceive at 43 and 46, I focused on nourishment.

Consistently giving my body the nutrients it needed to support hormones, egg quality, and a healthy pregnancy.

These 6 foods were my staples:

1. Pasture-raised eggs
Rich in choline, DHA, B vitamins, and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, eggs are one of the most supportive foods for fertility and early development.

I ate 3–4 eggs per day.

2. Wild-caught salmon
A powerful source of protein, omega-3s (especially DHA), iodine, and choline, all essential for hormone balance and egg quality.

I ate salmon 3–4 times per week.

3. Grass-fed beef
Rich in highly absorbable iron, zinc, B12, and choline, this supports ovulation, energy, and overall reproductive health.

I ate grass-fed beef daily.

4. Avocados
Loaded with monounsaturated fats and key nutrients that support blood sugar balance, hormone health, and the uterine lining.

I ate ½ to 1 avocado per day.

5. Cruciferous vegetables
(Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale)
Rich in fiber, vitamins C and K, folate, and sulforaphane, they support detox pathways and help eliminate environmental toxins that can impact fertility, while providing antioxidant support for egg and s***m quality.

I ate 2 servings per day.

6. Pumpkin seeds
A great source of zinc, iron, and healthy fats that support ovulation, progesterone production, and overall hormone balance.

I ate a couple tablespoons daily.

Many health-conscious women trying to conceive are doing things they believe are helping.

Overtraining
Intense HIIT workouts
Long-duration cardio
Intermittent fasting
Very low-carb diets
Cold exposure therapy
Hot yoga

But in your late 30s and 40s, your body responds differently.

What once worked can start to create more stress than support.

This doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong.

It just means your body needs a different approach now.

One that prioritizes nourishment and safety.

This is often the shift that changes everything 💛

If you’re trying to conceive in your 40s, protein becomes foundational.

Not because it’s a trend…

but because of how deeply it impacts your blood sugar.

And your blood sugar directly influences:

✔️Ovulation
✔️Egg quality
✔️Hormone balance
✔️Inflammation
✔️Implantation
✔️Miscarriage risk

As insulin sensitivity naturally declines with age, your body becomes more vulnerable to blood sugar spikes.

This is where protein becomes essential.

It helps slow down glucose absorption, stabilize insulin, and create a more supportive environment for conception.

✨ How to start stabilizing your blood sugar:

• Include protein with every meal
• Don’t eat carbs on their own
• Build meals around protein first
• Add healthy fats, veggies, fiber
• Aim for ~25–30g protein per meal

Why the Dirty Dozen is misleading…

It doesn’t account for genetically modified crops (GMOs). GMOs can harm gut health, increase inflammation, and disrupt hormones.

I keep it simple:

1. If it’s a high-risk GMO crop → buy organic
2. If I’m eating the skin → buy organic
3. If it’s leafy greens → buy organic

Everything else becomes flexible.

You don’t need to be perfect.

You just need to be intentional. 💛

You don’t become infertile because you had a birthday.

What changes in your 40s is your internal environment:
your metabolism, hormones, inflammation levels, and microbiome.

These are the factors that influence egg quality, ovulation, implantation, and embryo development.

And they’re often overlooked.

When you start addressing them, everything can shift.

Supporting these shifts led to:

✨ My first baby at 44
✨ My second baby at 46
✨ And now, hundreds of women I’ve worked with conceiving as well

Today, I teach this exact framework inside my Fertile After 40 Masterclass so you don’t have to guess your way through this.

Your body may need different support.

But your story is not over.

✨ About Rebecca ✨
Hi, I’m Rebecca! With over 20 years of experience in holistic health optimization, I’ve dedicated my career to helping women overcome major fertility and hormonal challenges. After being told I had less than a 1% chance of conceiving without donor eggs, I went on to have two healthy, naturally conceived babies at 44 and 46 using evidence-based, holistic strategies. Since then, I’ve guided hundreds of women over 40 to optimize their health, navigate complex fertility hurdles, and bring home healthy babies. My journey—and the success of my clients—proves that with the right approach, motherhood after 40 is absolutely possible.💕

Loved this conversation with 💛

Preparing for pregnancy isn’t only about timing. It’s first about optimizing all areas of your health. Your health is a far better predictor of fertility than your chronological age.

When you address key drivers like blood sugar regulation, mitochondrial health, and systemic inflammation, you can improve your fertility and egg quality in as little as three months.

Your body is dynamic. Your fertility is not fixed ✨
