Copper is an essential trace element that plays a role in numerous important processes in the human body. It acts as a cofactor in various enzymes and other proteins and is therefore crucial for many metabolic reactions.

๐ช๐๐ฌ? Copper-containing enzymes contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism, the maintenance of normal connective tissue, and normal iron metabolism. In addition, copper plays an important role in the nervous system and is involved in the formation and maintenance of myelin, the protective sheath surrounding nerve fibres.
๐ช๐๐ข? Copper deficiency is uncommon, yet individuals with certain medical conditions, malabsorption issues, or very restricted diets may be at higher risk of developing copper deficiency.
๐ช๐๐๐ฅ๐? Copper is found in a variety of foods. Good sources include shellfish, organ meats such as liver, nuts and seeds, cocoa products, whole grains and legumes such as chickpeas and lentils. Many fruits and vegetables also contain small amounts.
๐๐ข๐ช ๐ ๐จ๐๐? Excessive copper retention in the body over time can be toxic for humans, particularly for the liver. The EFSA concluded that daily intakes of up to 5 mg copper are not expected to lead to adverse copper accumulation in adults and established an acceptable daily intake of 0.07 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.
