Are the thoughts about first bowel movement after birth gving you anxiety? Well, you are not alone. Frearing the first sh*t is QUITE normal and so many women feel the feelings around it.
But why is sh*tting such a thing? Because you are exhausted, your body is exhausted, everything is exhausted. If you had a spontaneous birth, your pelvic floor has stretched just enough to fit a human being through it. Or you've had a caesarean section and any tension in your belly not only feels like everything is falling out of you, but also really hurts. And all the swelling, tears and stitches? Not so much fun.
That's why the first bowel movement after birth is often scary. But you'll get through it and we are more than happy to also support you through this journey. Let go:
1 | We want soft stools. But constipation is unfortunately super common in the postpartum period. Flaxseed, psyllium husks and lots (!) of water can help - or just stool softeners from the pharmacy.
2 | Slow down, baby. If possible, hand your baby over to you partner or mother or doula or whoever is in reach and take your time.
3 | In position. A small stool in front of the toilet can work wonders. Put your feet on it and get in a small squat while sitting. This helps the stool to move elegantly through your re**um.
4 | Breathe. You can try to breathe the stool out, i.e. take a deep breath into your pelvis and gently push it down as you breathe out. Sounds weird, but it works.
5 | Wash with care. Don´t use toilet paper that feels like sand paper but spray yourself with a peri bottle and dry the an+s and perineal area with a soft towel afterwards.
How did you experience your first sh*t after birth?
