❓What is electroencephalography of the brain❓

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a is a noninvasive test used to find problems related to electrical activity of the brain. An EEG tracks and records brain wave patterns. Small sensors with wires are placed on the scalp, and then send signals to a computer to record the results.
❓What does it show❓
This research shows:
🔸rhythms of electrical activity of the brain, their characteristics;
🔸increased or reduced connectivity between all the regions
🔸dominant frequency distribution of all 19 regions
🔸knowledge of frequency distribution gives us an approximation of blood supply in those regions
🔸knowledge necessary for protocol development

🔸ритмы электрической активности мозга, их характеристику;

What is the Success Rate?
Through our years of experience with neurofeedback, we have reached the point of having very high expectations for success in training. When such success is not forthcoming, or if the gains cannot hold, then there is usually a reason for that which needs to be pursued.

It turns out that among the vast majority of clients (>95% in one clinician’s experience) the actual outcome exceeds prior expectations. Against such low expectations, the changes that can be produced with neurofeedback may even appear miraculous.
One EEG Biofeedback office has a sign on its front desk: “We expect miracles. If none occur, something has gone wrong.” Incredible capacity of our brains to recover function when given a chance is the miracle of neurofeedback.

Neurofeedback was developed in the 60s and 70s.

In 1968, Barry Sterman, a neuroscientist at the University of California🏥, Los Angeles, stated that this method helps cats to cope with epilepsy attacks, and later noted positive results when working with people.

In the course of research, it was found that the human brain 🧠 is a mobile system that constantly changes during learning. This property is also called a reorganization of the brain, or neuroplasticity. It consists in changing neurons, their connections 🔗, and functions when you get a certain experience.

During training, a person learns to control their brain, reduce or increase its activity. This makes the brain work more efficiently.

How does neurofeedback work?
Using sensors and special software, we measure brain activity and reflect it back through the video display💻. We transfer nothing to the brain, we only record and use the information that is revealed to us through the EEG (Electroencephalogram)📇. When we allow the brain to see its own activity♻, it can then configure itself for the best performance and functioning. In this way, a person learns how to bring himself to a stable condition without medication.

What is Neurofeedback?
In the late 1960s , scientists discovered that it is possible to rebuild and retrain our brains. Then came the idea of neurofeedback. In other words it is a brain gym where the brain is given information about its own activities, which allows it to change and to improve by itself.

How many dolphins do you see in this picture?
Probably you just counted in your head "1,2,3,4,..."? And the last number that you got to was your answer to the posed question. But that's not how everyone would think about the problem. In fact, some languages do not even have words for exact numbers. Language shapes the way you think.

There are about 7000 languages that are being spoken worldwide and they all differ in sound, vocabulary and structure. The way our language is being used has implications on how we think about and perceive situations, things, people, etc. If somebody would break a plate by accident, in English you would be inclined to say "He broke the plate". Spanish speakers are more likely to use the expression "The plate broke (itself)". Studies have shown that English speakers are more likely to remember who the culprit was, because the information is important for expressing that something broke and thus less likely to perceive the event as the accident that it was.
In the German language "bridge" is a female noun while in Spanish it is male. When you ask a German speaker to use adjectives to describe bridges they will be mostly sterotypically feminine (beautiful, elegant, etc.) while a Spanish speaker is more likely to describe bridges with sterotypically masculine adjectives (e.g. strong).
It might be interesting to ask yourself how the language you speak shapes the way you think. Can you adapt the way you speak towards more positive thought patterns?
NEUROFEEDBACK can assist through training the brain to dissolve destructive thought patterns and support the ones that will help you thrive.

Have you ever wondered why caffein makes you feel awake?
When you are not sleeping, your body produces a chemical called adenosine. The more of this chemical binds with the specific receptors in your body the more tired you get. Caffein and adenosine have a very similar structure, which is why caffein binds to the same receptors, leaving less receptors for adenosine to connect to and thus making you less sleepy. This means that coffein does not actually give you ore energy it just turns of the switch of feeling the exhaustion.
If you drink vast amounts of coffee (caffeinated tea etc.) on a regular basis your brains will develop more adenosine receptors, which is why you will need to drink more and more caffein to stay awake. It is also why you feel incredibly tired once you drink less than your usual amount of coffee.
Furthermore, caffein leads to a higher production of adrenaline in your body, which increases your heart rate and blood pressure and might create a feeling of anxiety for some.
NEUROFEEDBACK can help in treating sleep disorders to create healthy sleeping habits for an overall increased well-being (and a decreased need of coffee).

Ever wondered what happens if you sleep too much?
In previous posts we have talked about the effects of a lack of sleep, but what about oversleeping? The world's largest sleep study shows that sleeping too much is equally as impairing as sleep deprivation.
Oversleeping makes us feel less lested because it throws off our circadian rythm. The circadian rythm lets you know when you are hungry, thirsty or tired and regulates your energy throughout the day. Being your internal clock, it is interlinked with hormone production (which is important for your blood pressure, metabolism, your organs functioning properly etc.) and cell regulation which in turn is of importance for your immune system. When this natural cycle is interrupted, your body reacts with a reset of the cycle, making you feel drained of energy. This is also how jetlag is explained.
NEUROFEEDBACK can help in treating sleep disorders to create healthy sleeping habits for an overall increased well-being.

A lack of sleep makes us emotionally irrational. The amygdala (the part of your brain responsible for your emotional response) gets highly reactive when you are not getting enough sleep. This is because sleep strengthens the communication between the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex, which is supposed to regulate the amygdala. An interruption in this communication leaves the Amygdala underregulated and thus overstimulated, leading to an emotional imbalance.
Furthermore, sleep offers emotional first aid. Especially during REM sleep, emotional experiences we had during the day are being processed. That is why waking up in the morning we feel better about past difficult situations and can cope better with the emotional memories we have made. In this case, time can heal emotional wounds, especially if you spend yours sleeping.
NEUROFEEDBACK can help in treating sleep disorders to create healthy sleeping habits for an overall increased well-being.

Have you ever been told to 'stay awake on it'? Probably not!
During deep sleep, your brain transfers information from your hippocampus to your cortex. This process is not only important for you to not forget information and store it long-term, but also to make space in your hippocampus to be able to absorb new knowledge.
When you are sleeping your brain is replaying your day ten times faster than you originally experienced it. This process strengthens your memory representation, similar to the active recall learning method discussed in a previous post.
But sleep does not only process information, it also interconnects memories together. This is why you might wake up in the morning suddenly knowing the answer to a question or solution to a problem. Hence the saying "Sleep on it!".
Studies have shown that adults getting less than 8 hours of sleep at night perform in cognitive tests as if they were 8 years older than their actual age.
NEUROFEEDBACK can help in treating sleep disorders to create healthy sleeping habits for a better memory and an overall increased well-being.

Did you know that sleep is crucial for your immune system?
Studies show that people sleeping less than 8 hours a night are affected by viruses and other diseases more often. Additionally, it has been proven that chronic sleep loss makes vaccines less effective. But when you get a full 8 hours of sleep each night your body will show successful immunization to viruses. That is because during sleep your body produces and releases cytokines, which is a protein targeting infections and inflammation. A lack of sleep means less cytokines in your body, which consequently will make it easier for you to get sick and will make recovery times longer.
NEUROFEEDBACK can help in treating sleep disorders to create healthy sleeping habits for an overall increased well-being.

18/11/2020

Have you ever wondered what happens in your brain while you sleep?
Your sleep is divided in 2 stages: Non-rapid eyemovement (NREM) and rapid eyemovement (REM) sleep.
The NREM stage is made up of different stages once more, from light to deep sleep. In deeper sleep phases your body is recharged in terms of your immune system and memories are being processed.
During REM sleep your brain wave activity speeds up, it is now about as active as when you are awake. This is the phase in which you have the most vivid dreams and are the most creative. Memories are being connected and and problems are being solved.
NREM and REM sleep compete for time during 90 minute cycles in which you go through each stage.
In the 1st 4 hours of sleep (more for children and young adults) the 90 minute cycles are mostly made out of deep NREM sleep. The 4 hours following, REM as well as light NREM sleep dominate the 90 minute cycles. As a consequence sleeping for 6 instead of 8 hours means a loss of 25% of sleep, but at the same time a loss of 50% or more REM and light NREM sleep. Thus, 8 hour sleep periods are necessary for adults to experience balanced sleep stages.
In the next posts we will explain how a lack of sleep as well as oversleeping can have negative consequences.
NEUROFEEDBACK can help in treating sleep disorders to create healthy sleeping habits for an overall increased well-being.

Studies have shown that a growth mindset, meaning a strong will to grow, actually does lead to growth.
If you think positively and in challenges ("I have not solved this problem YET"), it will make you get smarter and solve more problems in the long run. Instead of giving in to dispair (I am not smart enough to do this. How come these things always happen to me?) the growth mindset is all about asking why and what. WHY have I not solved this problem yet? WHAT can I do to solve this problem? People with a growth mindset realise that difficulty and effort translate into opportunities of growth. Consequently, a growth mindset leads to great success. Watch out for your own thinking patterns and mindsets and try to establish those that will support your desired lifestyle.

While it can be extremely challenging to change your thought patterns by yourself, NEUROFEEDBACK is here to assist. It trains your brain to better regulate itself and guides it to your desired brain patterns. Away from self-doubt and towards more self-confidence.

Have you ever read or listened to something over and over and by the sake of it could not remember the information after a few days?
Studies have shown that spaced repitition is important for effective learning. If you hear or see information once, you will forget most of it very quickly. The more often you repeat this information the more likely you are to remember all of it. Additionally, the closer to 0% you get on your forgetting curve before repeating information, the more effort your brain has to invest in recalling what you previously learned, which makes it more likely that you'll remember the information in the long run. A thought out repeating schedule in combination with the active recall learning technique (see previous post) makes a highly effective learning experience!

28/10/2020

Active recall has been found to be the most effective method for learning. Instead of only repeatedly looking over your notes or the book you're reading, in active recall you take a few seconds to try to remember all that you've learned. Next, you look up everything you were not able to recall and try to bring back those details once more. This works in an academic setting but also when trying to remember day to day things like a shopping list or names of people at an event. The reason this method is so effective is that active recall does not only create new encoded features in your brain but organizes them and connects them to the information you're going after.

21/10/2020

Air pollution knows no borders, almost every human on this earth is currently exposed to particulate matter and about 7 million people worldwide die prematurely per year due to air pollution. Since COVID-19 is a respiratory disease it is not surprising that studies have shown higher COVID-19 mortality in parts of the world that regularly exceed air pollution thresholds set by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Air pollution affects almost every organ in your body, including the brain. Long time exposure to particulate matter has a negative influence on the neurodevelopment of children and young adults. Furthermore, it causes a faster cognitive decline in aging adults, increases the risk of diseases like alzheimer's and parkinson's and increases the risk of strokes and dimensia.
