Hello! Something a little different today for World Mental Health day. I wanted to share a couple of the things I do to look after my mental health, just in case it’s helpful for any of you. The last year has been amazing, but also really challenging from a mental health perspective, and it has taught me so much!
1) journaling - I try to journal every night, particularly when I’m on tour - working through things that have been worrying me, or just being honest with myself about how I’m feeling on that particular day. This has helped me become much more tuned into my body and my brain!
2) swimming - this has been a newer discovery for me, but I find swimming is such a good way to spend a bit of time with my brain!! There’s something about the rhythmic breathing which is so therapeutic, and I also find it a really good way to stretch out my muscles after long practice sessions. I try to swim every couple of days on tour if I can!
3) therapy!! This is definitely the biggest one for me. I’ve been having weekly therapy for over a year now, and it has honestly been one of the most transformational things. I started it at a time where I was really struggling with some big decisions, but I now find it so important that I’ve kept it up. I mentioned therapy to someone this week and they said ‘why? What’s wrong with you?’ - I think this is such a common idea, that you have to be broken to be doing to therapy - but actually, I’ve found going to therapy when life is feeling pretty good is when some of the best work happens. You really start to understand your own brain better and can build up your resilience for when things are feeling more difficult. If you’ve been thinking of trying therapy: DO IT!!
And lastly: be kind. There is so much anger, pain and disagreement in the world at the moment, but I try to keep reminding myself that you never know what someone is going through under the surface. Kindness can be such a powerful thing ❤️
