Gertrude Nieuwenhuijs-Moeke, MD, attended the University of Ghent in Ghent, Belgium, and received her medical degree in 2003. Furthermore, he conducted her anesthesiology residency at the Maria Middelares Medical Center Gentbrugge in Gentbrugge, Belgium, and at the University Medical Center Groningen in Groningen, The Netherlands. She is presently finishing her PhD thesis at the University of Groningen on per-operative renal protective strategies in kidney transplantation. Dr. Nieuwenhuijs-Moeke is a member of the European Society for Organ Transplantation and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. She feels that her success is attributable primarily to her commitment and dedication. Dr. Nieuwenhuijs-Moeke was honored with the Astellas European Foundation Transplantation Grant (2014) and the ESA Baxter Grant for improvement of preoperative outcome (2017). Dr. Gertrude Nieuwenhuijs-Moeke is a member of the scientific committee of the International Meeting of Ischemia and Reperfusion Injury in Transplantation (IMIRT). She also sits on the local scientific committee of kidney transplantation at the University Medical Center Groningen. Moreover, she remains involved in several research projects. According to the UMCG’s website, “she designed, organised and executed the VAPOR-1 Trial, a single centre RCT (Vapor-1 trial, BJA 2017), and organised the participation of Erasmus Medical Centre Rotterdam and University Medical Centre Groningen in the CONTEXT trial. A Danish multicentre RCT looking at the effect of remote ischemic conditioning on outcome in renal transplantation using kidneys from deceased donors (Context trial, AJT 2016).” Currently, she is the project leader and PI of the VAPOR-2 Trial (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02727296), an international multicenter study on the effect of a sevoflurane based anesthesia versus a propofol based anesthesia on the incidence of DGF in recipients of kidneys of donation after circulatory death (DCD) and donation after brain death (DBD) donors.
