THE PROBLEMs are:
1. it is not a refugee problem - we had the issue of financing medical translators long time before - we have many migrants for over 20 years now who do not speak a proper German so they can easily understand everything if they need medical treatment. There are several proposals done but nobody is interested to solve the problem. Even translator's professional groups told me: no, we do not have special trainings for medical translators.
2. Doctors occupational groups (Ärztekammer) are completely right: we need trained medical translators for patient- doctors/ nurses talks and the translators need to be paid via health insurances. Now the problem is not solved at all and it is done on the back of doctors & nurses who have the problem to make the non-german speaking patient clear what's going on.
3. Additionally to the problem of more non-german speaking patients, we have the issue of the demand of German-properly speaking doctors and nurses from abroad, but: "Integration" courses: are simply language courses and now we have the problem that the majority of language schools are doing integration courses for refugees only which is forced by the State; O-tone (citation) of Hamburg language schools: the quality of the integration courses is far below average since there are very young man who are not interested in learning any German and who are only visiting those courses because they need it for their stay in Germany.
4. our customers from the East bloc or from Tunesia, India and so on are high level specialists, doctors and nurses, who need to speak a proper German. As a doctor colleague from Iraque told us: Iraque or Syrian refugees who come over the green borders are not nurses and not doctors. Now those specialists who we need urgently in Germany are somehow discriminated because the State focuses on refugees only - but there are no doctors and nurses.
SOLUTION: we offer more special medical communication courses in Hamburg and Berlin and abroad - for doctors and nurses from abroad willing to learn a proper German and willing to raise up the German healthcare system with their knowledge and experiences!
Wer krank ist, muss zum Arzt. Damit der behandeln kann, muss sich der Patient allerdings verständlich machen können. So einfach, so logisch. Eigentlich. Denn das Integrationsgesetz sieht für Flüchtlinge im Krankheitsfall keine Dolmetscher vor. Von T. Anthony.
