It’s the uniquely intimate and indelible bond forged by parent and baby from that first fluttering feeling in the womb to the far reaches of life.
It’s the gentle, nurturing touch conveying love, trust and security.
It’s intently gazing into the eyes of another.
It’s relationships emerging from a sense of shared experience and tradition.
It’s the solidarity of community.
It’s the trust and confidence we place in the hands and hearts of healthcare professionals to provide respectful care and medically sound advice to us and our loved ones.
Everywhere we look, there is evidence of how profoundly our connection to the people and the world around us shape who we once were, who we are now and who we are to become.
When I first began my journey as a childbirth professional five years ago, it was my mission as a doula to ensure that pregnant and birthing persons have a voice and a choice during pregnancy, childbirth and the care of their newborn. Since then, my focus has rotated from one particular aspect to another as I participated in various training and further education (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Freier Stillgruppen, HypnoBirthing®, Spinning Babies, Stillen für Alle – EISL).
It was only more recently, during an IAIM Infant Massage Instructor Course in July of 2017, that I arrived at a glaring revelation:
It is this connection, in its varying qualities, that I have observed most strongly influences how pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood are experienced by babies and their families.
In supporting families, it is my mission to honor and promote the fundamental importance of connection within the context of childbirth from the time of conception and pregnancy to birthing, breastfeeding and the world of parenting beyond.
