Are you judging them, or protecting yourself? 🧠✨
It’s against and today we are discussing two big theories from Social Psychology: The Fundamental Attribution Error and Cognitive Dissonance.
This is what they are:
Fundamental Attribution Error: We tend to attribute other people’s shortcomings to their personality (internal), but our own shortcomings to our circumstances (external).
Cognitive Dissonance: The mental discomfort we feel when our actions don’t match our attitudes and values.
We often use the first bias to avoid the second feeling. If I admitted that I was rude for cutting someone off in traffic, I’d feel bad (dissonance). So, I blame the traffic (situation). But if YOU cut me off? You’re just a bad driver 🙃
The Wisdom:
Can you be curious, ask questions and understand wjy the person on the other side is acting the way they are? Can you judge others with the same context and kindness you give yourself? We are all just doing our best in our own situations 🤍
Can you think of a situation where you needed to turn it around and be kinder?
