Physical inactivity and sedentary behavior are major contributors to endocrine and metabolic diseases.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36283907/

Physical inactivity, defined by not reaching the recommended levels of weekly physical activity (at least 150 min of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week), is now recognized as the FOURTH leading cause of death and has been demonstrated to be a contributor to 40 chronic diseases. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22818941/, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28814614/

🛏️ Recent clinical studies show bed rest induces insulin resistance, reduced VO2max, increased blood pressure, etc. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29620686/

🧠 People that are classified as physically inactive are 1.4 times more likely to develop dementia, and insulin resistance is hypothesized to drive cognitive decline. https://www.bmj.com/content/365/bmj.l1495

🫀 The most physically inactive individuals are 1.75 times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease, as inactivity is one of the greatest single risk factors. https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.118.312669

☠️ Aging and declining physical activity levels lead to sarcopenia and muscle atrophy, which is associated with an increased risk of premature death. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2213231720301178

Myelinated nerves :)

Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through myelinated nerve fibres and Schwann cells. Myelin (green) is an insulating fatty layer that surrounds the nerve fibre (axon, black), increasing the speed at which nerve impulses travel. It is formed when Schwann cells (grey) wrap around the fibre, depositing layers of myelin between each coil. The outermost layer consists of the Schwann cell's cytoplasm and is known as the neurolemma or sheath of Schwann.

Gut-disc axis: A cause of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) and low back pain?

👉 According to the existing evidence, the microbiome could be an important factor for inducing and aggravating IDD through changing or regulating the outside and inside microenvironment of the intervertebral disc (IVD).

👉 Three potential mechanisms by which the gut microbiota can induce IDD and cause LBP are:

1⃣ translocation of the bacteria across the gut epithelial barrier and into the IVD,

2⃣ regulation of the mucosal and systemic immune system, and

3⃣ regulation of nutrient absorption and metabolites formation at the gut epithelium and its diffusion into the IVD.

Figure: Gut-disc axis. Model of intestinal epithelial disruption signals that can regulate intervertebral disc degeneration. Gut microbes alter the intestinal microbial environment by modulating gut microbiota translocation and composition, increasing intestinal permeability and inflammation and modifying metabolites absorption. These changes can result in local and systemic responses that can cause IDD. A Pathogen displacement, B immune system modifications and C microbial metabolites production and cytokines

Structure and function changes of sensory nervous system in IVD-related LBP.

👇👇👇

The structure and function changes of sensory nervous system are involved in the induction and the maintenance of LBP from the following aspects.

👉 1) Disc herniation could injure and inflame affected nerves.

👉 2) New nerve ingrowth into degenerated IVD amplifies the impacts of IVD-derived nociceptive molecules on sensory endings.

👉 3) Under mechanical and pro-inflammatory stimulation, the nociceptive-transmitting pathway exhibits a sensitized function state and might ultimately contribute to LBP.

IVD: intervertebral disc; IVDD: intervertebral disc degeneration; ECM: extracellular matrix; AF: annulus fibrosus; NP: nucleus pulposus; ALL: anterior longitudinal ligament; PLL: posterior longitudinal ligament; DRG: dorsal root ganglion; LBP: low back pain.
