A little reminder about the nature of existence:

In many Tibetan temples we can find a colorful wall painting explaining two important concepts of Buddhist teachings: Samsara (or cyclic existence) and Nirvana. These two metaphors are combined in the painting of Wheel of Life. The colors and arrangements of the scenes are varying, but the parts of....

From the Doka by Zen monk Ikkyu Sojun (1394 - 1481)
Translation RH Blythe

On the sea of death and life,
The diver's boat is freighted
With "Is" and "Is not";
But if the bottom is broken through,
"Is" and "Is not" disappear.

What my body does, accords not
With what my mouth utters,
And my heart
Is full of shame.

The mind cannot become the Buddha;
The body cannot become the Buddha;
Only what cannot become the Buddha
Can become the Buddha.

I don't build myself
A grass-roofed hut
In the deepest mountains,
Nevertheless, I loathe
This world.

As lightning
Which disappears like dew,
Which vanishes like a phantom—
Thus think of yourself.

A mind to search elsewhere
For the Buddha,
Is the foolishness
In the very centre of foolishness.

The dew on the lotus leaf
Undyed by its colour,
Just as it is,
Is the Real Form of Buddha.

A story, originally from Attar of Nishapur, a Persian Sufi mystic and poet:

A powerful king, ruler of many domains, was in a position of such
magnificence that wise men were his mere employees. And yet one day he felt himself confused and called the sages to him.
He said: ‘I do not know the cause, but something impels me to seek a certain ring, one that will enable me to stabilise my state.
‘I must have such a ring. And this ring must be one which, when I am unhappy, will make me joyful. At the same time, if I am happy and look upon it, I must be made sad.’
The wise men consulted one another, and threw themselves into deep contemplation, and finally they came to a decision as to the character of this ring which would suit their king.
The ring which they devised was one upon which was inscribed the
legend:
THIS, TOO, WILL PASS

THE EMPTY BOAT

He who rules men lives in confusion.
He who is ruled by men lives in sorrow.
Yao therefore desired
Neither to influence others
Nor to be influenced by them.
The way to get clear of confusion
And free of sorrow
Is to live with Tao
In the land of the great Void.

If a man is crossing a river
And an empty boat collides with his own skiff,
Even though he be a bad-tempered man
He will not become very angry.

But if he sees a man in the boat,
He will shout at him to steer clear.
If the shout is not heard, he will shout again,
And yet again, and begin cursing.
And all because there is somebody in the boat.
Yet if the boat were empty,
He would not be shouting, and not angry.

If you can empty your own boat
Crossing the river of the world,
No one will oppose you,
No one will seek to harm you.
The straight tree is the first to be cut down,
The spring of clear water is the first to be drained dry.
If you wish to improve your wisdom
And shame the ignorant,
To cultivate your character
And outshine others;
A light will shine around you
As if you had swallowed the sun and the moon:
You will not avoid calamity.

A wise man has said:
" He who is content with himself
Has done a worthless work.
Achievement is the beginning of failure.
Fame is the beginning of disgrace."

Who can free himself from achievement
And from fame, descend and be lost
Amid the masses of men?
He will flow like Tao, unseen,
He will go about like Life itself
With no name and no home.
Simple is he, without distinction.
To all appearances he is a fool.
His steps leave no trace. He has no power.
He achieves nothing, has no reputation.
Since he judges no one
No one judges him.
Such is the perfect man:
His boat is empty.
(from Thomas Merton, "The Way of Chuang Tzu")

The Tao is empty
Utilize it, it is not filled up
So deep! It seems to be the source of all things
It blunts the sharpness
Unravels the knots
Dims the glare
Mixes the dusts
So indistinct! It seems to exist
I do not know whose offspring it is
Its image is the predecessor of God
(Tao Te Ching #4, translation Derek Lin)
