Did you know that plants like cactus 🌵 could be used to make leather?
Sustainable fashion brands like Ikon Sweden and DriiBe featured in our eco-store are using animal-free alternatives, including coconut, cork and cactus to make leather. And, according to environmentally conscious experts like the folks at treehugger.com, Cactus leather is completely sustainable.
The bio-based material used to make cactus leather is lauded for its breathability, making it a perfect vegan leather option to make handbags, shoes, apparel, and furniture. Apparently, even Mercedes-Benz has used leather alternatives, including cactus, to the interior of one of their concept electric car.
Cactus leather is made directly from the nopal cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) also known as the prickly pear or Indian fig optunia, which is widely available and fast-growing without the need for pesticides, making it sustainable and organic.
The farming practices of Desserto, the only manufacturer of cactus leather are eco-friendly; they are certified organic and use only rainfall to water the crops avoiding the use of excess water.
