What do you “actually” do as a Lactation Consultant?

Honestly… the real question is: what DON’T I Do and what don’t I get asked? 😅

Here are some of the most common questions I’m asked as an IBCLC — and yes, they’re all completely normal:

✨ “Is this latch supposed to feel like this?”
✨ “How do I know if my baby is getting enough?”
✨ “Is my pump even working… or is it mocking me?”
✨ “Which bottles and pacifiers actually support breastfeeding?”
✨ “Why is one breast the overachiever and the other on part-time hours?”
✨“Is this normal newborn behavior, or is my baby just dramatic?”
✨“How do I fix ni**le soreness?”
✨“Do I need to pump this often… or ever?”
✨“What does an oral tie even look like?”
✨“How do I go back to work without losing my supply?”

And because feeding looks different for every family:

🍼 “Why is my baby struggling with bottle feeding?”
🍼 “How do I pace feed correctly?”
🍼 “Do we need a different bottle or ni**le shape?”
🍼 “What formula should we try next?”
🍼 “Why does my baby react to some formulas but not others?”
🍼 “Am I switching formulas too often… or not enough?”

And my personal favorite:
💛“Am I doing this right?”

(Yes. You’re trying, you care, and that matters most.)

No question is too small, too awkward, or too “silly.”

If you’ve wondered it — someone else has too, and I’ve heard it before.

Whether you’re breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, formula feeding, or navigating bottle-feeding challenges — you still deserve support. I’m here for every feeding question, every moment of overwhelm, and every tiny win along the way.

You’re not meant to do this alone. 💛

💛 A Gentle Update on Tricare In-Network Status for Breastfeeding Support for the FLW Area 💛

I want to take a moment to speak from the heart.

I hear the emotion in your voices when you call and ask, “Are you in network with Tricare yet?”
I hear the sadness, the frustration, and the exhaustion of wanting support but feeling like the system is standing in the way.

I want you to know this: I have been fighting for you.
Since July, I’ve been calling and emailing Tricare twice a week.
I’ve reached out to base leadership, hospital command, local mayors, and state representatives.
And so far… silence. Crickets. No movement.

It breaks my heart because I know how deeply families here need support — real, hands-on, in-person care.
I am so sorry that Tricare is failing military families in this way.
I am sorry that you’re stuck waiting.
And I’m sorry that this system makes accessing essential care so hard.

If you are one of the families waiting:
– Please continue to file ICE complaints
– Email Tricare West and base leadership
– Advocate — your voices matter
– If you’re pregnant, try to prepare financially just in case
– Add lactation support to your baby registry, just like photos or gear, it is that important

And please remember:
Our free Feeding Support Group is held every Wednesday from 10–11 at the clinic, right outside the gate.
No cost. No referral. No insurance.
Just support, community, guidance, and a safe place to land.

I’m here.
I’m fighting for coverage.
I’m fighting for you.
And I won’t stop.

✨ Why Prenatal Feeding Classes Matter ✨

Preparing for birth is important… but preparing for feeding your baby is just as essential.

So many families tell me they wish they had taken a prenatal breastfeeding or feeding class before their little one arrived — because once baby is here, the learning curve can feel steep, emotional, and overwhelming.

A prenatal feeding class helps you:
🍼 Understand what’s normal in the first days
🤱 Learn how latch, positioning, and newborn cues actually work
🎯 Prevent common challenges instead of troubleshooting them later
🧠 Build confidence so you start your journey informed, not anxious
💛 Know when to seek support early (and why it matters!)

Think of it as setting the foundation for a smoother, calmer postpartum period.

Whether you’re planning to breastfeed, pump, combo feed, or you’re simply unsure — learning before baby arrives gives you the tools you need when it matters most.

If you’re interested in a prenatal feeding class (virtual or in-person), drop a 💛 or message me to save your spot!

Your future self will thank you.

🤧 Cough & Cold Season Is in Full Swing!

If you're breastfeeding and/or pumping, you don’t have to suffer through without relief — but you do need to know what’s safe.

Using Dr. Hale’s Lactation Risk Categories (L1 = Safest → L5 = Hazardous), here’s a quick breakdown of common cough/cold meds while breastfeeding:

✔️ Usually Safe (L1–L2)

Antihistamines:
• Claritin (loratadine) – L1
• Allegra (fexofenadine) – L2
• Zyrtec (cetirizine) – L2
• Benadryl (diphenhydramine) – L2 (can make you VERY sleepy)

Decongestants:
• Afrin Nasal Spray (oxymetazoline) – L3 (limit to 3 days)

Cough:
• Sore throat sprays – L2
• Cough drops (menthol/benzocaine) – L2
• Mucinex (guaifenesin) – L2
• Robitussin DM (dextromethorphan) – L3

⚠️ Use With Caution

• Pseudoephedrine — may decrease milk supply
• Benzocaine throat spray — L3

• Herbal products (elderberry, echinacea, zinc) — limited research, but I am a bit cripsy and love me some holistic options!!!

❌ Avoid

• Benzonatate (Tessalon Perles) — unsafe for children if accidentally ingested
• Phenylephrine — often ineffective + not recommended

💛 You deserve to feel better AND protect your feeding journey.

If you're ever unsure about a medication, reach out — you’re not alone in navigating this season.

Let’s talk baby registries — and the sneaky ways they influence your feeding journey. 👀

Baby registries are BIG business.
And while they’re fun to build, many of the “must-have” lists are carefully crafted by companies whose goal isn’t your breastfeeding success… it’s sales.

Here’s the truth:
A lot of registry recommendations can undermine lactation before you even begin.

✨ Examples of how registries manipulate new parents:
• Overselling gadgets that “fix” normal newborn behavior
• Automatically adding multiple bottle sets + fast-flow ni**les
• Suggesting pumps and pump parts that aren’t physiologically supportive
• Promoting pacifiers that encourage shallow oral patterns
• Recommending huge stashes of formula “just in case”
• Leaving out the things that actually help feeding go smoothly (like an IBCLC visit, correct fl**ge sizes, or baby-led feeding tools)

✨ None of this is your fault.
The system is designed to make you feel unprepared so you buy more.

✨ So what actually matters?
✔ Choosing bottle ni**les with a gradual slope
✔ Sticking with newborn flows instead of “moving up”
✔ Knowing that not all pacifiers support breastfeeding
✔ Understanding that normal newborn feeding doesn’t require gadgets
✔ Prioritizing support over stuff

Your feeding journey is shaped far more by information, support, and realistic expectations than by what’s in your shopping cart.

If you ever want help curating a registry that supports YOUR goals — not a company’s bottom line — I’m here.

💛 Your goals are my goals.

ABM Mastitis Protocol Update: What Parents Need to Know

The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine updated their Mastitis Protocol in 2022, and it clears up so many long-standing myths about what mastitis is — and how to actually treat it. Let’s set the record straight so you can feel confident and supported in your feeding journey. 💛

✨ Myth vs. Evidence-Based Update

🚫 Myth 1: “Mastitis means you need to empty the breast as much as possible.”
✅ Truth: Over-removing milk can worsen inflammation. The new protocol emphasizes physiologic feeding — feeding your baby normally and avoiding aggressive pumping or “draining” techniques.

🚫 Myth 2: “Clogged ducts must be massaged out — the harder, the better.”
✅ Truth: Deep, firm massage can actually make inflammation worse. Gentle lymphatic massage (light sweeping) and reducing inflammation are now recommended.

🚫 Myth 3: “Any breast pain or redness means you need antibiotics.”
✅ Truth: Not all breast inflammation is an infection. Many cases are inflammatory mastitis, not bacterial. Anti-inflammatory care is often more appropriate — and avoids unnecessary antibiotics.

🚫 Myth 4: “You must pump after every feed if you’re dealing with mastitis.”
✅ Truth: Extra pumping can overstimulate milk production and increase inflammation. Stick with your baby’s normal feeding rhythm unless an IBCLC directs otherwise.

🚫 Myth 5: “You should stop breastfeeding if you have mastitis.”
✅ Truth: You can continue feeding if tolerated. Emptying to comfort, reducing inflammation, and getting the right support can help resolve symptoms faster.

✨ What the Updated Protocol Emphasizes

✔️ Physiologic milk removal (normal feeding patterns)
✔️ Reducing inflammation first: ice, NSAID/anti-inflammatory, rest
✔️ Avoiding unnecessary antibiotics
✔️ Avoiding aggressive massage
✔️ Understanding mastitis as a spectrum — not one single condition
✔️ The importance of individualized care and in-person support

💛 If you’re experiencing breast pain, fullness, fever, or recurring inflammation, you deserve real support — not confusing advice that makes things worse. Reach out to an IBCLC for evidence-based guidance tailored to your body and your baby.

Christmas & Birthday Cards for the New Office

As many of you know, I absolutely treasure watching your little ones grow. If I’ve been a part of your feeding journey, nothing warms my heart more than seeing updates from my tiny friends.

As I settle into the new office, I’d love to fill the space with Christmas cards, birthday cards, or even a quick picture or note from you and your little one. Your milestones, smiles, and memories mean so much and truly brighten my day.
Thank you for letting me be part of your story.

🌿 Why In-Person Support Matters More Than Social Media Advice 🌿

We live in a world where parenting tips, breastfeeding hacks, and “expert” advice are everywhere… and yet, so many families still feel confused or overwhelmed.

Here’s the truth: Social media is content.
In-person support is care.

Online posts can be helpful for general education, but they can’t:

— See your baby’s latch
— Watch how your body responds
— Evaluate ni**le pain or milk transfer
— Notice tension, oral function, or feeding cues
— Tailor a plan specifically for your baby

Every feeding journey is unique. What worked for someone on TikTok may not be what your baby needs — and that’s okay.
