What’s Really Happening That First Week of Breastfeeding
So much changes in those first few days after baby arrives — for you and your little one! Here’s a peek at what’s normal and expected during that first week 👇
🌸 Days 1–2
Your baby is taking small, frequent meals of colostrum — that thick, golden milk packed with antibodies and nutrition. Baby’s stomach is tiny — about the size of a cherry 🍒 — so those little feeds are exactly what they need!
💛 Days 3–5
Your milk begins to “come in” — it’s transitioning from colostrum to mature milk. It’s normal to feel engorgement or fullness during this time. Baby’s stomach grows to about the size of a walnut 🌰, and they’ll start taking slightly larger feeds.
🌼 By 1 Week
Engorgement usually improves as your body and baby find a rhythm.
Your baby’s tummy can now hold about the size of a large egg 🥚, and you’ll start to see more steady feeding patterns develop.
✨ Remember: frequent feeding, skin-to-skin contact, and a good latch help regulate supply and make this transition smoother for both of you.
If you’re feeling unsure, uncomfortable, or overwhelmed — reach out for lactation support early. You don’t have to figure it out alone.
