Ultrasonically-Assisted Dissolution of Magnesium Oxide with the UP200Ht Sonicator
This video illustrates how a compact magnesium oxide (MgO) tablet rapidly disintegrates and dissolves in water using ultrasonic cavitation of the UP200Ht ultrasonicator. By delivering high-power ultrasound into the liquid, intense cavitation produces localized microturbulence and strong shear gradients. These dynamic forces accelerate mass transfer across the solid–liquid boundary, breaking down the tablet structure within seconds. The result is a homogeneous solution without elevated temperatures, chemical additives, or extended waiting times. Dissolving solid samples is a common and often critical step in sample preparation and pre-analytical workflows, and sonication provides a reliable, reproducible way to accomplish this task.
Ultrasonic dissolution offers clear advantages for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical development, where dissolution speed, solubility enhancement, and reproducibility are essential. As ultrasonic dissolving is scalable, energy-efficient, and gentle on thermolabile compounds, this technique is highly suitable for both research and industrial applications.
