1763 im Londoner King’s Theatre uraufgeführt, verbindet Johann Christian Bach in Zanaida barocke Dramatik mit klassischer Eleganz. Im Zentrum steht die türkische Prinzessin Zanaida, die aus politischen Gründen nach Persien reist, um König Tamasse zu heiraten – doch sein Herz gehört einer anderen und so intrigiert er mithilfe seiner Mutter gegen Zanaida. Machtspiele, Verrat und bedrohte Selbstbestimmung treiben die Handlung voran. Erst 2010 wiederentdeckt, entfaltet diese Oper in ihrer emotional aufgeladenen Musik Liebe, Hass und heroischen Idealismus 🎭. Nun ist es mir eine Ehre an der Aufführung in Potsdam im mitwirken zu dürfen und ich freue mich sehr auf die kommenden Aufführungen! Winter Laryngology Course in Helsinki 🗣️✨
The course focused on developments in Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis and brought together a fantastic group of international speakers and experts to share the latest diagnostics, treatment strategies, and hands-on approaches in laryngology.
We had insightful talks, engaging discussions, and plenty of practical exercises that gave everyone the chance to apply new techniques and deepen clinical skills.
What a great opportunity to learn and connect with colleagues from around the world. 🌍
Looking ahead, the next course in Helsinki is already planned: “Laryngology & Phonosurgery: Comprehensive Summer Course” — definitely one to look forward to!

What an honour! ✨
The past days I had the privilege of teaching courses in the Phoniatric Intensive Intervention (PI Intervention), developed in Münster, to the wonderful phoniatrics team at Helsinki University Hospital. Together, we treated particularly severe cases of psychogenic voice loss.
I am touched by the way I’ve been welcomed here. This video was filmed on my very first evening, a group of physicians and voice therapists from the clinic surprised me with an a capella performance at the restaurant during a beautiful dinner.
I’m grateful to be working with such an inspiring team here in Finland 🇫🇮✨

Oft werde ich gefragt, wie ich den Spagat zwischen der Klinik in Münster und den Opernbühnen dieser Welt schaffe. Ehrlich gesagt: Es ist ein ständiger Slalom. Für das Magazine durfte ich in einem dreiteiligen Interview ein wenig aus dem Nähkästchen plaudern. UKM-Podcast – Von der Bühne ins Behandlungszimmer🎙
Passend zum Ende von 2025 – dem Jahr der Stimme – wurde ich zum UKM Podcast "Risiko und Nebenwirkung" eingeladen und durfte dort mit Anja Wengenroth und Felia Holtermann über unterschiedliche Facetten der Stimme sprechen.🗣
Entstanden ist eine interessante Folge, in der ich Einblicke aus zwei Perspektiven teilen konnte: als Oberarzt für Phoniatrie und Pädaudiologie und als professioneller Konzert- und Opernsänger.
Wir sprechen unter anderem darüber, warum die Stimme ein wichtiger Teil unser eigenen Identität ist und was wir tun können, damit wir gut bei Stimme bleiben können. Außerdem erzähle ich etwas über die Besonderheiten meiner eigenen Stimme und wie sie mich zu einem der wenigen Countertenöre machen.

Eine q***re Liebesbeziehung aus dem Alten Testament, vertont in leuchtenden Opernszenen des 17. Jahrhunderts: Marc-Antoine Charpentiers David et Jonathas (1688) erzählt die Geschichte der Beziehung mit atemberaubender Intensität.

Articles like these leave no doubt that Philipp Mathmann is establishing himself in the international Concert- and Opera business. The young German countertenor lives in Berlin, grew up in Lippstadt, Germany, and had his first lessons as a countertenor with Heike Hallaschka in Muenster. Since 2010, he has undertaken voice training with Renate Faltin (Hanns Eisler Musikhochschule, Berlin),and, since 2016, has had additional lessons with Annette Goeres (Berlin). He also received valuable inputs to his training from Ingeborg Danz, Kai Wessel and Barbara Schlick (Cologne), Antonio Lemmo (Rome),Nicholas Clapton and Dame Emma Kirkby (London). He was a scholar of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes, the College of Music and Dance in Cologne, and the College of Music in Detmold.
During his studies, Mathmann was awarded the German National PrizeJugend Musiziert, and at the 2011Giulio Perotti Singing Competition was honoured with not only a first prize, but an ‘extraordinary recognition’ for the best performance in the field of concert and oratorio.
Mathmann performs regularly at international European festivals such as Winter in Schwetzingen;Bremer Musikfest;Festival Oude Muziek inUtrecht; MAfestivalinBruges, Festival della valle d’itriain Martina Franca (2017), International HändelfestspieleinGöttingen (2017) and Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele (2018). He sang concerts at venues liketheTonhalle Concert Hall in Dusseldorf, at Frankfurt Opera, TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht, etc.
In 2011, Mathmann made his opera debut at the Château Sanssouciin Potsdam. Since, he has continued to enjoy leading opera roles, for example, he performed at the Opera of Heidelberg, the Opera of Winterthur (2017), at the Tage der Alten Musik of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR; in 2016). In 2017 he made his debut as a recording artist, performing in the world premiere recording of F. X. Richter’s oratorio La deposizione della croce di Gesu Cristowith the Czech EnsembleBaroque. In 2018, he gave his debut in Russia singing the main role “La Bellezza” in a fully staged production of “Il Trionfo del Tempo” at the Stanislavsky Theatre in Moscow. He was the first countertenor ever to perform this soprano role.
Mathmann has participated in many productions for broadcast, working with organisations including Hessischer Rundfunk, WDR, and Dutch Classical Radio (NPO Radio 4) together with great musicians and conductors such as Philipp Chizhevskiy, Dorothee Oberlinger or Diego Fasolis.
