BLUE ZONES & ONE HEALTH – A Future Model for Our Islands
What do the world’s so-called Blue Zones have in common? These are regions where people enjoy exceptionally long and healthy lives – thanks to strong social networks, wholesome nutrition, daily physical activity, a sense of purpose, and a supportive environment.
The One Health concept goes a step further: it sees health not just as human well-being, but as something deeply interconnected with animals, ecosystems, and sustainable living environments. This holistic approach is particularly relevant for our islands of Föhr, Amrum, and Sylt.
THE HEALTH CAPTAINS CLUB was founded on this very vision – on Ascension Day 2003, on the Captain’s Island of Föhr. It was established as a European leadership network spanning medicine, health, science, business, policy, and civil society – united by the mission to take shared responsibility for a healthier future.
Now, the time has come for us islanders to get on board ourselves.
From May 14 to 17, 2026, the HEALTH CAPTAINS HEALTHY LONGEVITY ISLAND SUMMIT will take place across Föhr, Amrum, and Sylt.
This is a unique opportunity to transform our islands into model regions for healthy longevity – guided by a clear master plan based on the principles of Blue Zones and One Health.
We invite everyone across our islands to be part of this journey.
Let’s take responsibility together – for our health, our communities, and future generations.
