NEWSFLASH!!! This law has finally been voted and the latest proposal of a higher income limit starting only April 1st have been been voted!

More to come in my stories in the next few days!!!

The much awaited compulsory paternity leave was not finalized though 😔

The new Elterngeld bill is sparking discussions about the future of parental leave in Germany.
A petition within the parliament reached 50,000 signatures, enough to have a debate on October 9th before the final vote in December.

Did you know I founded my own Kita in Berlin?

When my first child was born, I had to make a choice: spend a year trying to find a spot in my dream Kita or set up my own. I chose founding one: the Kitanelle Coccinelle, a French-German Kita in Prenzlauer Berg.

But with hindsight I would not recommend it: a Kita search would have taken a lot less time...if you have a baby in Berlin and will need childcare in the next 18 months then my online course is for you.

“When it comes to Parental allowance I would always recommend Baby in Berlin. Elodie is my go-to for any questions regarding parental leave or allowance. As our situation (like for most expats) is a bit tricky and of course our level of German even on the best day is questionable, we would never be able to submit the forms correctly and in time, without her help.

Moreover, I really appreciate her taking the time to explain to us, not just do our dirty work in german, but really made us understand our options and how it work.

Now 7 months later she still takes the time to answer my questions, and we so appreciate the support and advice she has given us. Not many times can you feel someone got your back with German bureaucracy, this is one of them. Thank you Elodie!”

Alright everyone, because I dont want you to get caught off guard if it’s your first Christmas in Germany, let’s share what surprised you most about it!

I’ll start:

- shops close at noon on Christmas Eve and reopen on December 27th
- my in-laws serve potato salad and sausage for Christmas Eve
- the present are brought by “der Christkind” on Christmas Eve, not by Santa on Christmas Day
- Christmas markets are closed after the 24th of December

How about you? What was the big “erm, sorry, what” moment for you???

Another year, another Christmas. Although it isn’t quite “just another Christmas” this year, is it?

For me anyway, it feels very different this year. I am more than ever aware of my privileges and anxious about the future. I was watching the movie “Love Actually” the other day, and it felt for the first time somehow very decadent. All these lights, all this food, all this glitter, all these presents. I shook my head first at so much luxury. And then I became nostalgic of that era when everyone (in the western world at least) did not have a care in the world outside of finding a funny present for Secret Santa and making sure the turkey was well roasted.

As I long for a carefree Christmas for us all, I remind myself Joe Flaherty’s words

“If you're able to tuck in a healthy, peacefully sleeping child into a warm bed in a safe home, you've won the lottery of life.”
