Life's incredible journey begins at the moment of conception. From this single-cell start, a new and unique human being begins to develop. This is a story of rapid and awe-inspiring growth, with each stage marking a new milestone in a person's life. 👶💖
Week 1: The Zygote
At the moment of fertilization, a s***m and an egg unite to form a single cell called a zygote. This cell contains a complete set of 46 chromosomes—23 from the mother and 23 from the father—which determine all of the baby's genetic traits, including eye color, hair color, and gender. The zygote immediately begins to divide as it travels down the fallopian tube toward the uterus.
Week 2: The Blastocyst
By the end of the second week, the cell mass, now called a blastocyst, implants itself in the uterine wall. The inner cells of the blastocyst will go on to form the embryo, while the outer cells will form the placenta.
Week 3: Gastrulation
During the third week, the blastocyst undergoes a process called gastrulation, where three distinct layers of cells form. These layers will develop into all the different tissues and organs of the body. The nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, also begins to form during this time.
Week 4: The Heartbeat
By the fourth week, the embryo is the size of a poppy seed, yet its tiny heart has already begun to beat. The beginnings of the eyes, ears, and limbs also start to take shape. This rapid development continues, building upon the foundation laid at conception.
