VERMI 4Green & VERMI Liquid: Plant-based support in poultry worm management 🐓

Worm challenges are among the most common health issues in poultry farming. Eggs of Ascaridia, Capillaria or Heterakis gallinarum can survive for years in the environment and are hard to detect in daily practice, making full elimination nearly impossible. 🪱

VERMI weakens eggshell integrity of Heterakis gallinarum 🪱

A recent in-vitro study conducted by the Department of Poultry Science in Athens, Georgia (USA, 2024) examined the effect of VERMI on the eggs of the cecal worm Heterakis gallinarum, a common parasite in poultry and known vector for blackhead disease (Histomoniasis).

The study focused on the worm egg’s shell, a key protective layer that allows the parasite’s eggs to remain infectious in the environment for years.

▶️ Result:
At concentrations above 500 ppm and an exposure time of more than 7 days, VERMI significantly damaged the eggshell integrity of the worm eggs (p < 0.0001).

Tomke Smit, now Product Manager for the pig segment at DOSTOFARM, has recently completed her master’s thesis.

Her research focused on the use of oregano essential oil in weaned piglets, applied via feed, drinking water and in combination.

📊 In a 49-day trial with 384 piglets, the study found:
– Significantly improved feed conversion in the DOSTO-in feed group
– Lowest mortality in groups with single oregano application (no losses recorded)

These findings highlight the potential of essential oregano oil as a plant-based supplement to support feed efficiency and reduce health risks. 🐖

Tomke Smit has been part of our team as a trainee for quite some time. She has now successfully defended her Master’s thesis and will be starting as a product manager specialising in pigs. 🐖

In her master’s thesis - supervised by our colleague Dr. Thilo Borchardt, Head of Research & Development at DOSTOFARM - Tomke investigated the influence of DOSTO oregano oil as a feed and drinking water additive in weaned piglets.

Thyme oil naturally contains thymol, a well-known aromatic compound with a long history in animal nutrition. It is valued primarily for its expectorant effect and its positive effect on feed acceptance – especially during times of weather change or stress.

Anise oil is known for its characteristic sweet, spicy scent and is often used to promote appetite. It has an antispasmodic effect and helps with coughs and bronchitis.
