Think of magnesium as the relaxation mineral. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
You must have magnesium for your cells to make energy, for many different chemical pumps to work, to stabilize membranes, and to help muscles relax.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The reason we are so deficient is simple: Many of us eat a diet that contains practically no magnesium — a highly processed, refined diet that is based mostly on white flour, meat, and dairy (all of which have no magnesium).⠀⁣

Including the following in your diet as often as you can:⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Kelp, wheat bran, wheat germ, almonds, cashews, buckwheat, brazil nuts, dulse, filberts, millet, pecans, walnuts, rye, tofu, soybeans, brown rice, figs, dates, collard greens, shrimp, avocado, parsley, beans, dandelion greens, and garlic.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
I also highly recommend a daily magnesium supplement.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
The most absorbable forms are magnesium citrate, glycinate taurate, or aspartate, although magnesium bound to Kreb cycle chelates (malate, succinate, fumarate) are also good. To properly absorb magnesium we need a lot of it in our diet, plus enough vitamin B6, vitamin D, and selenium to get the job done.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Avoid magnesium carbonate, sulfate, gluconate, and oxide. They are poorly absorbed (and the cheapest and most common forms found in supplements).⠀

These “good” fats also help your body produce prostaglandins otherwise known as the hormones that cool off inflammation.⁣⁣

Optimal sources of omega-3 fats include small cold-water fish like wild-caught salmon, sardines and herring, organic flax and h**p seed oils, walnuts, Brazil nuts and sea vegetables.⁣⁣

Scientists suspect that early humans ate almost equal amounts of omega-6 and omega-3 fats. ⁣⁣

Our hunter-gatherer human ancestors got healthy omega-6 fats from seeds and nuts. They got their omega-3s from eating wild game and fish as well as foraging for wild plants.⁣⁣

As people began to refine oils from plants, the ratio became skewed more toward omega-6 fats. This created a drastic imbalance in the modern diet, making us more vulnerable to diseases such as cancer and heart disease.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The more omega-3 fats you eat, the easier your body can cool off, which means less inflammation that forms the root of nearly every chronic disease, especially those impacting the brain and the heart.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Besides eating plenty of wild, fatty fish, optimize your fat intake with nuts and seeds, grass-fed butter (or ghee if you’re dairy sensitive), avocados, grass-fed meats, extra-virgin olive oil and olives.⁣

The federal government tells us that milk is a perfect food that Americans should lap up daily, three glasses to be exact—in spite of a large (and growing) body of research showing its lack of benefits and awful side effects. I agree, it is nature’s perfect food…but only if you are a calf!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The government’s dietary guidelines tell us to drink three cups of milk daily for adults and two cups for kids. Scientists and nutritionists warned us against dairy products under the premise that saturated fat causes heart disease. They are all wrong. And their bad advice has resulted in a generation of kids growing up on sugary, low-fat or fat-free chocolate milk, which is worse than whole milk in every single way. Remember that famous ad slogan, “Milk: It does a body good”? Well, it doesn’t. Science shows low-fat makes kids fatter.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you’re lactose intolerant or sensitive to dairy, then you should avoid it at all costs. But even if you are tolerant, milk shouldn’t be a major part of your diet. But if you’re worried about your calcium, here’s the dirty little secret of the dairy industry: Many food sources contain more calcium than milk, such as sardines, arugula, and tahini. ⁣⁣

Butter from pastured, grass-fed cows or goats is on my healthy fats and oils list. That doesn’t mean you should eat butter with abandon. But it’s fine to eat it like our grandparents did. That goes for cheese as well. It’s okay to eat some cheese in small amounts such as whole-milk, grass-fed cheese made with no additives -- while you’ll want to avoid others like the plague. ⁣⁣

The form of casein in goat’s milk (A2 casein) is not inflammatory, unlike the casein prevalent in most cow’s milk (A1 casein) that creates gut issues, allergies, eczema, and acne. Goat’s milk is also easier to digest so it doesn’t cause stomach discomfort for most.

Because trauma is misunderstood we think back to our early years from our adult lens. We think we ‘should’ be fine. We may even feel guilty for the emotional issues + pain we face.

This leads to internal shaming + cycles of self betrayal.

I’ve come to understand ‘social anxiety disorder’ isn’t a disorder at all. It’s a preoccupation with the perception of people’s opinion of us.

Something we learned as children: to be hyper vigilant to the mood state of parent-figures to cope + to attempt to get our needs met. A symptom of codependency dynamics so many of us grow up in.

We also can’t sit with ourselves. With trauma, comes so much nervous system activation. This means cyclical fear-based thoughts based on our past. So we distract and numb. No one taught us how to feel an emotion. How to process it + released it without shame. Emotions were just ‘too much’ (for some of us this is when more tire of our parent-figures labeled some emotions as wrong.)

All of these behaviors are just coping mechanism. Ways we adapted to protect ourselves. The manifestation of enmeshment (families without boundaries), codependency, + trauma that’s been passed from generation to generation.

These are patterns that we can unless by connecting with our inner child, beginning to place boundaries, + healing self betrayal by keeping small promises (learning self trust.)

If everyone stopped buying soda, or factory­-farmed meat, or food with high fructose corn syrup, it would start a food revolution from farm to fork.⁣

We have been trained to think that cooking is a burden, drudgery, and time consuming. Yet it is one of the most essential acts that make us human. Michael Pollan, in his book Cooked, says, “The decline of everyday home cooking doesn’t only damage the health of our bodies and our land but also our families, our communities, and our sense of how our eating connects us to the world.” ⁣

Wendell Berry said that “eating is an agricultural act.” It is also a political act, and so is cooking.⁣

How do we end our current chronic disease epidemic and health care, environmental, and financial crises? ⁣

We have to cook our way out. When we cook, we rebuild our communities, strengthen the bonds within our families, and nourish our bodies and souls.⁣

Imagine building your house out of rotten wood or disintegrating bricks. Remember the fable about building your house on sand? Or the one about the three pigs? Your structure and foundation matter. Why would you build your body from defective ingredients? ⁣

For example, we need the best quality fats—our brain is 60 percent fat, our nerve coverings are all made from fat, every one of your 10 trillion cells is wrapped in a little fatty membrane. Do you really want to make them from oxidized damaged refined oils in your French fries or KFC? ⁣

We also need the best quality protein. The body makes most of its important molecules from protein including muscle, cells, and immune molecules. Not all protein is the same. The best type of protein to build muscle is other muscle—animal protein. You can get protein from plant foods, but the quality is lower and it has lower levels of key amino acids needed to synthesize new muscle, especially the branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine and also lysine and sulfur based amino acids). ⁣

There are also compounds such as phytates in plant proteins like beans and nuts that impair protein absorption. Rather than being turned into muscle, plant proteins are often just burned as calories. ⁣

If you are vegan, especially as you age, you need to ensure you get these by increasing the overall volume of protein rich plant foods, adding protein powders, and supplementing with BCAA. If you want to eat less meat and include more plant proteins, combining them helps the body utilize the plant protein from beans. Think chili con carne! ⁣

And don’t forget all the vitamins and minerals we need to build tissues, muscles, and bones, including vitamin D, vitamin K, calcium, magnesium, and more. Next time you chomp down on something, ask yourself if you are fine with it becoming part of you for the long term. If not, don’t eat it and find the best quality ingredients you can, ingredients that help you thrive. ⁣
