When we talk about mental health, we often focus on the individual: therapy, mindfulness, resilience, exercise. These matter, but they’re only part of the story.
EuroHealthNet’s 2025 report on social inequalities in health reaffirms that mental health is deeply shaped by the conditions in which we live. Poverty, housing problems, job insecurity, discrimination, and lack of access to healthcare all increase the risk of poor mental health.
The data shows that:
🧑 One in eight adults in Europe reported poor mental health in 2024.
💼 People in lower occupational groups are twice as likely to report poor mental health compared to those in higher groups.
💰 Financial insecurity and lack of control at work are among the strongest drivers of mental health inequalities.
Mental health promotion means going beyond self-care. It means fighting for policies that guarantee fair wages, healthy housing, social protection, and equity in access to services.
Mental health is not just individual. It is social, economic, and political.
