"There's a parrot at the door!!"

Not what you'd expect to hear on Halloween, but my son was almost right... this fabulous cockatoo came for a visit last night with his DJ owner & four small costumed children! 😄🎃😍

Definitely the highlight of our Halloween evening...the music was my son's choice when told that the cockatoo likes techno 🤣🤣

We had a great chat on the doorstep while the bird danced on my arm - such an unexpected, and welcome, moment of warmth, laughter and connection.

When we open to connection and beauty; when we actively seek these moments, our nervous system attunes towards noticing and experiencing more of them.

Sometimes in the most unexpected of places!!

This is why, in trauma healing, we begin - not with the symptoms and 'what's wrong', you KNOW that experience all too well - but in noticing even micro moments of what is okay (sometimes it's simply 'neutral' or not pain), pleasurable, joyful, beautiful or fun.

These are GLIMMERS. The opposite of trauma triggers.
Moments when we notice what feels good...and we slowly expand from here. Because when feeling becomes safer, we can also begin to heal what was too painful or too much. We begin to get unstuck.

I'm really looking forward to teaching my free peri-menopause masterclass tomorrow, on the last day of Menopause Awareness Month.

31 October @ 14.00cet

This class is a 1-hour practical look at how we can optimise our energy, our hormones and our mental and emotional clarity during this powerful time of transition.

We NEED this information BEFORE we get de-railed by symptoms and start to feel as though we're going crazy. This is the class I wish I'd been able to go to a decade ago, when my body and mind began to change just after (and perhaps precipitated by) my move from the UK to Denmark, and the loss of my maternal grandmother. I was grieving the loss of a person I loved dearly and who'd meant the world to me, but I was also grieving the loss of a community and a job I'd loved. This all disguised the fact that under all this, my hormones were fluctuating wildly from one day to the next and my emotions and behaviour became almost unrecognisable to me, almost from one day to the next.

- emotional volatility: furious, frustrated, outraged...feeling tears well at what felt like 'minor' upsets
- aching hips and shoulders
- insomnia
- 4am anxiety and feelings of doom
- feelings of despair
- forgetting the names of things

This was just the beginning of my list and of course, it REALLY didn't help that I had no idea how much of this was related to the beginning of peri-menopause, because I HAD NO IDEA what that was!!

Now, a decade later - I'm going to share with you what I've learned, researched and tested. How to advocate for your own health and mental & emotional wellbeing and particularly, how to regulate and mitigate stress during this time of your life and how to eat and move to stay healthy and happy now, but also far into the future.

It's absolutely crucial that we're informed of what our changing bodies and minds need so we don't have to play catch-up or deal with poor health because of what we don't know.

When perimenopause started for me, I had no idea what was happening.

Suddenly anxious, irritated, mood all over the place - even a frozen shoulder that no one connected to hormones.
I saw doctors, physios, specialists. Not one mentioned perimenopause.

After 25 years working with the body, I still didn't understand what was happening to me.
Now I know better.

Perimenopause brings change. And the brain hates change!

I know from my own journey and from working with hundreds of women that this stage of life can bring a barrage of uncomfortable or distressing symptoms: hot flushes, brain fog, weight gain, aches, anxiety and disturbed sleep are the least of them, though they are the ones we at least know about!

The symptoms themselves, and trying to understand what on earth is happening to us can feel both exhausting and disorientating and it all chips away at both our confidence and capacity just when we're at the top of our game - as women, business owners, leaders, mums, partners and breadwinners.

World Menopause Month

The theme of world menopause month this year is Lifestyle Medicine.

So how do we empower and support ourselves through this powerful time of change and transition?

The truth is that menopausal women have got a lot of sh*t to deal with - now more than ever before in our history. We have so many different roles that we fulfil at this stage in our lives. We are business owners, career women. We are leaders and carers; We're mums of small children, as well as looking after elderly parents. We're homeowners with a mortgage to consider. We're worrying about inflation and pensions at the same time as trying to support our children through challenges in school.

And all this is against a backdrop of a constant barrage of information all day everyday... and it's relentless.

Never before have we been able to know - minute by minute - the intricate details of wars playing out on different continents, of political upheaval; of genocide.😢 And it's so hard not to get lost down the rabbit hole - because we care. Genetically, we're wired to be empathetic. ♥️

And amidst all the turmoil our bodies appear to be betraying us - hot flashes, aching joints, sleepless nights, crippling anxiety that comes out of nowhere at 4:00 in the morning is the least of it! 😳

Then there's the very significant brain changes that nobody told us about. Our brains are literally being pruned during perimenopause, but so many of us think they're going crazy because we literally lose a word mid-sentence or lose track of thought in the middle of a meeting or presentation... and it affects our self confidence. It affects our work and it affects our ability to enjoy life.

After over 8 years of going through this transition - I'm now 55 years old and still have my period regularly - I can safely say that I am an expert in perimenopause. I'm also an expert on the nervous system and somatic approaches to physical and mental health.

Research is finally catching up with what some of us have known for years: perimenopause isn't just about hot flashes¸it affects both the body AND the brain.
