Leadership on construction sites is also about speed and respect
Yesterday, I attended a safety meeting with approximately 20 construction workers on site. Several very concrete and reasonable requests were raised – primarily related to well-being and comfort while working under demanding weather conditions.
My response was straightforward: I take responsibility for this, and I will ensure that action is taken – quickly.
Today, I was stopped on site by several workers who simply wanted to say thank you. They shared that they had rarely experienced their input being taken so seriously and acted upon so promptly – especially from the client side.
This reinforces something I have seen many times:
👉 Better well-being on site leads to better quality of work.
👉 When people are listened to, mutual respect follows.
As leaders and health & safety coordinators, we have a responsibility to support people – and to engage in dialogue, even when it involves difficult conversations. With both management and workers. Health and safety is not theory; it is practice, people, and courage.
Yes, investing in well-being and safety may cost a little in the short term.
But in the long run, it is always money well spent.
