Chronic rhinosinusitis involves inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the sinuses, resulting in thick nasal mucus, stuffy nose due to the prevention of mucus draining, and facial pain. Some researchers postulate that bacteria that infect the nasal sinuses develop biofilms, allowing them to become resistant to antibiotics.
Lemongrass (C. citratus) EO inhibited biofilm formation by bacteria (K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, and S. epidermidis) isolated from people with chronic rhinosinusitis with no toxicity to human cells in a lab study. The researchers concluded that lemongrass essential oil may be beneficial for people with chronic rhinosinusitis.
