An estimated one in five athletes have lower airway dysfunction. Why is asthma so prevalent in winter sports?

🤔 Think about this for a second:

A normal adult breaths between 5 to 10 liters of air per minute in a resting state.

Going out for a jog?
You breathe about 30 liters of air per minute.

Winter athletes like crosscountry skiers?

Studies show that they inhale about 200 liters of air per minute.

To put it in perspective:
This is 20x times the amount of air compared to normal resting rate.

What comes in, must also come out.

Air is converted into oxygen and energy, and expelled through the lungs as CO2.

📖 Some facts about CO2:

• CO2 is a bronchodilator: CO2 is a natural, essential regulator of the acid/alkaline balance of the blood, and aids in opening the smooth muscles in the airways.

• Low CO2 and constriction: A low CO2 tolerance leads to overbreathing and expelling e excessive CO2 from the lungs (hypocapnia). This, in turn, causes the airways to tighten and constrict.

• Body’s defense mechanism: The loss of CO2 also causes the body to produce more mucus, further restricting the airways and causing even more overbreathing, creating a cycle.

What can athletes do to cope with this insane amount of CO2 buildup?

CO2 tolerance training is why elite athletes seek out Stig to train them to win their next medal, championship or world record.

It’s the bread and butter of freedivers, and an integral part of the Breatheology method.

Let love breathe 🤗 (and give a little bit back to the universe).
This breathing exercise brings some of the warm and fuzzy feelings back in this cold month.
Are you set?
👇 Here we go:
1. Sit in a comfortable position with your hands on resting on your knees
2. Gently breathe in and out
3. Take a deep breathe into the belly and count to 3
4. Think of a person that you feel great love towards and allow this love to flow through you
5. Hold the image of this person in your mind for up to 4 seconds
6. Breath out gently for up to 6 seconds and imagine love is filling the room
