I have to call the Danish government's treatment of people downright disgusting. Here's why:
A few months ago, I read a long article in one of the Danish national newspapers about an Iranian woman who felt cheated.
It started when the Danish embassy in Tehran applied for thousands of Iranian nurses to come to Denmark because there was an acute shortage of this professional group in Denmark. Lots of Iranian female nurses responded to the invitation and obtained visas for Denmark.
They sold everything they had at home, packed up their husbands and children and left for the promised land, Denmark. Most of them were disappointed because there were no internships for them when they finally arrived. A few were accepted into a three-year authorisation programme, where they had to demonstrate their skills in various departments of a hospital.
The woman I read about belonged to the latter group. She had high expectations that once the programme was over, she would be permanently employed in the department. Her colleagues in the department shared this view. But things turned out neither worse nor better than that, when she was just a few weeks from the finish line, the Immigration Service pulled the rug out from under her. Her residence permit was revoked. A small detail meant that she no longer met the requirements for a residence permit. This meant that she was also unable to complete her authorisation process in Denmark.
Right now, there is a total hiring freeze in the Danish healthcare system. Nevertheless, representatives of the Danish government are now on their way to the Philippines to hire several thousand nurses from there. And they will experience exactly the same thing as the Iranian woman mentioned in the newspaper.
Therefore, I would like to encourage everyone here who is from the Philippines to share this, so that we can prevent people from coming to Denmark with high expectations, only to return home empty-handed. The Iranian woman mentioned above and her family had absolutely nothing when they returned home. No home, no belongings, no job. We must not allow this to happen to anyone else, regardless of nationality.
It is disgraceful, shameful and completely unacceptable that Danish politicians are playing with people's lives in this way. We must put a stop to this so that we do not see more of these sad stories.
I hope you will share this post, possibly copy/paste it and share it widely in the Philippines and other places where it might be relevant.
