Mibanco Microfinance - SI DR A micro-finance ministry devoted to providing affordable financial services, building personal relat Why Microfinance? Have you ever given money to a beggar?

Or maybe a friend? Have you ever helped out someone in need only to discover that several weeks later they are not any better off? Often, we quickly reach into our wallets to help someone in need. But what if a lack of money is often just a symptom of a bigger disease? What if sending away the financially needy with pockets full of cash is like sending cancer patients away with a couple bottles of pain killers? They feel better for a few days but ultimately the problem continues to get worse. At the Microfinance Site in the Dominican Republic, we approach financial ministry much like a doctor who treats the disease and not just the symptoms. In many ways we function just like a small bank offering savings accounts, small business loans and financial and technical education to the surrounding communities of Jarabacoa. Instead of simply handing someone money, we teach habits and principles that will allow them to care for themselves. However, unlike a bank we desire to meet not only their physical needs but their emotional, and spiritual needs as well. We walk alongside our associates in the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of their lives, desiring to get to know the root of their problems in order to see them live financially free lives. What makes us different from other Microfinance Institutions? While the goal of most Microfinance Institution’s is to simply see a rise in income, our goal is to use financial services to build relationships with each one of our associates in order to share the spectacular work of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.. Sometimes this can be helping a mother clean her house as she pours out her most recent life struggles. Other times it is taking a mother and sick child to the hospital and praying for them, helping small children with homework or taking mother's to a woman's conference. In essence, our desire is to provide great financial services that changes hearts and not just bank accounts. We want to transform lives, not just the size of the house they live in. Our desire is that through financial services, each one of our associates might come to know a lasting hope, an unending love, an incredible redeemer. Our hope is that they would come to know their Creator.

After several months interacting with the associates through whatsapp and zoom, we had our first meeting at La Fé bank with all the security protocols for social distancing. We are grateful to God for this great meeting. The plan is to take small steps every day in the face-to-face area of our microfinance ministry.

SI Microfinance has been busy in this pandemic time. Our bank meetings have come to a halt, but we continue to communicate with the women through encouraging text messages, drive by visits from the car, and bi-weekly food distribution to those in need. Many households have no income in this time because of the curfews and social distancing measures that are imposed by the government. This past Wednesday distributed food for a second time.
In Los Higos: A few days before Wednesday’s food distribution, one of the women approached the bank coordinator telling her they had no food in their home. Neither women knew that we would bring food on Wednesday. We were all reminded of God’s plan and His timing!
We have also extended a no payment period for our women with loans. The penalties and interest are not being collected or accumulated at this time. Any payments made towards loans goes directly to the principle.
In El Amor: We are also supporting a coordinator who has two children. She and her husband have a business, but they have been closed for 40 days due to the virus. She has a loan and she would have needed to use all her savings to pay the loan. She and her husband are very grateful.

Last weekend we had our women's retreat. It was a blessing to all who were there. Microfinance women learned about how to sit at the feet of Jesus and practical ways to exercise our ears to hear the voice of God. and of course on personal finance. It was a wonderful time definitely Microfinance = Macrofun. Thank you very much to all who in one way or another helped us for this retreat to be done. Specially to Melody Phelps, Rebeca Clifford and Rebeca Duran.

Microfinance tried something new this week! In an effort to encourage and build up our small business owners & prospective owners, we held a focused training for women in the ‘salon’ business of cutting hair. An expert hair stylist, Savannah Baranyai, came from Cleveland to volunteer her time to teach on cutting hair of all types and styles. We had 10 women, 3 models, 2 translators, cut hair, purple hair and much hair cutting wisdom and many laughs. We were honored and blessed to have Savannah share her gifts and talents in this way. We thank God for HIS orchestrating of this event! It reminded us how HE uses all things together for HIS good!

Our 2nd training this year was a collective effort of Katia, Heidy and Melody to introduce the “envelope system” as a tool for managing personal finances. We provided an interactive exercise to experience the use of this tool. As we talked about reining in, managing and controlling spending to fit the household income, we gave practical advice of managing money. Each woman left with a personal envelope system of her own to implement this tool throughout the next months. We also spent time working on individual personal budgets, based on the homework from last training of keeping a spending log. We will continue to encourage and work with all the women in our weekly meetings in understanding and implementing personal money management.

Welcome 2019
Consider the importance of being part of the body of Christ, because we are different members with different gifts, working as a team is enriching and harmonious.
Last Friday we held our first, of many, financial trainings for 2019 focusing on budgeting.
Melody Phelps led the training "Your money, Your plan". God's perspective and how to live that out with money. Something that we noticed was The surprise faces of the women, when they realized they spend more than they earn.
We trust it will change with these classes. Our goal for every person to realize that the way to save money is to plan in advance, otherwise money leaves our pocket/wallet/bank account as fast as it comes in and often we don't even know where it goes. We want to help the women set money goals, plan how to reach them and encourage them to follow their plan.
We are exciting to see how God will use these tools in the live of the women we serve.

"For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
We had a Great and blessed time in our Christmas party.

Women's Microfinance Retreat 2018
JESUS WANTS TO SAVE YOUR LIFE. HOW ABOUT YOU?
We spent two days and a marvelous night in Hotel Gran Jimenoa in Jarabacoa; An unforgettable experience. God guided Heidy Guzmán to find the place where these beautiful women were ministered to, served, loved and care for. These women surrendered themselves spiritually and financially. The beauty supplies and the journals were provided by the last team who served alongside with us from the State. There is not doubt that God is responsible for this retreat. God is good and faithful, and we are grateful to Him for the people He provided to speak at the retreat. Dr. Jorge Baez, Pr. Miguel Ovalle Aquino and Ivelisse Malavè were a big blessing in the lives of these women. For Many of these women, it was one of the only experiences they have had to begin a change in their lifestyle. A new beginning with God as a priority in our work in these women's lives. I am grateful to God to have been a part of this experience and to be a witness to God changing lives.
