FIMRC's Global Impact Campaign is here 🌎 Half of the world's population is without access to proper health services. We can do better. FIMRC has lost nearly 63% of its income with the pause of global travel programs. With your help, FIMRC can continue providing access to proper healthcare to communities across the globe.

Feliz Valentines Day eve here from Anconcito! Today, we are celebrating our fantastic group of volunteers from Roger Williams University that came to visit Anconcito in early January. They prepared posters with our newly graduated local health promoters for their final evaluation at a local health fair, assisted in that health fair, and presented pivotal nutrition education to our diabetes and hypertension clubs. Additionally, they took height, weight and iron levels of over 160 children as part of our new nutrition project in Balcón Encantado, a government run housing project built specifically for families of Anconcito who identified as having persons with disabilities or severe overcrowding in their previous housing situation. Thank you so much for your great attitudes and contagious energy!

Happy Tuesday FIMRC Anconcito followers! Today we are highlighting the wonderful work of the Patels, a group of volunteers who visited us over New Years who are all pursuing medicine at different levels in their careers. They executed a fantastic talk on anemia to the mothers of our nutrition club, and capacitations on how to detect skin cancer and stay properly hydrated to our Diabetes club. Additionally, they even helped us begin our nutrition project in Balcón Encantado where we took weight, height and iron levels of 40 children and infants. We were so happy to have such a lively group of young volunteers here at the foundation and wish them the best of luck in their futures.

Happy Wednesday everyone! This week we want to highlight some fantastic volunteers that came to work with FIMRC Anconcito over the holidays at the end of last year. David, Kavitha and Medha worked with our Nutrition, Diabetes and Hypertension clubs as well as with our local high school health promoters. They provided talks on obesity and proper nutrition, played bingo with our largest group of diabetes club patients ever (47 patients), and helped practice and teach how to properly take blood pressure measurements. Thank you for your wonderful attitudes and the spirit you brought to our holiday season!

to our Desfile Cívico (Civic Parade)! Every year towards the holiday season, the local Anconcito Government facilitates a parade for all of the local community contributors including schools, businesses, organizations, etc. We were lucky to have our entire team there this year walking together, including FIMRC Anconcito's mascot, Chiripa! Thanks to all of our wonderful health promoters who walked with us through the heat and helped us represent.

This past December, our FIMRC team successfully executed our first annual themed music competition. This year's theme was aimed at combatting domestic violence against women and termed "Rompe tu Silencio, No Mas Violencia" (Break your silence, no more violence). Nine local high school students chose to write and perform songs about ending domestic violence in front of over 160 community members at the new local community center. We especially want to thank all of the participants and our FIMRC Anconcito coordinator, Freddy Baque for all of their hard work. It was a major victory!

After five months of preparation, our local health promoters finished their campaign against adolescent pregnancy, “Métele un gol a tu futuro” (score a goal for your future), on November 23rd. With leadership from our FIMRC Anconcito Field Operations Manager, Luisa Cardona, and a local Peace Corps Volunteer Leader, Casey Healey, the promoters recruited eight soccer teams of local 10th graders from different high schools to learn about pregnancy prevention and safe s*x. The promoters presented various themes to their schoolmates varying from consent, to making a personal life plan (focusing on future goals and the steps to achieve those goals), and even methods of transmission for various s*xually transmitted infections. We are tremendously proud of our health promoters and the local FIMRC Anconcito and Peace Corps teams for their dedication and resiliency.

On December 3rd, World AIDS day, our fantastic local high school health promotors facilitated a wonderful and informative presentation in front of the Anconcito community. UNAIDS estimates that there were between 1200-4400 new HIV infections diagnosed in Ecuador in 2018 and it is more prevalent here on the Coast. The promotors were each responsible for presenting a specific subtopic of information such as methods of transmission, current treatment protocols, or correct prevention methods. They flawlessly presented their themes in front of around a hundred community members and handed out red ribbons, signifying universal awareness and support for people living with HIV. We are so proud of their accomplishments and hard work and they continue to impress while educating the community!

A few weeks ago, FIMRC had the fantastic opportunity to work with Dr. Lipsky, who specializes in domestic violence prevention. During her time here in Anconcito, she trained FIMRC staff, peace corps volunteers and other local organization members on how to lead focus groups centered on domestic violence in a caring, efficient and professional manner. In addition to all of this, she empowered the FIMRC team with tools and methods on how to analyze focus group results, and then appropriately teach local community groups about domestic violence. They gained the knowledge of how to identify a potential victim, when a situation might escalate, and what an individual can do when they know something is going on, amongst many other pivotal pieces of information. Additionally, FIMRC’s local high school health promotors campaigned against Domestic Violence in front of the community after Dr. Lipsky gave them strategies to end domestic violence and femicide here, and across the world. We are so grateful for her time, preparation and expertise and will continue to use the skills she gave all of us. ¡Ni una menos! Sherry Lipsky

Back in June, our health promoters participated in a leadership camp to promote volunteerism and engagement of young people in the community organized by the US Peace Corps Volunteers. At the camp, the health promoters learned community diagnostic tools. Using those tools, the promoters recognized that teen pregnancy is a big problem in Anconcito, and wanted to take action. The FIMRC health promoters are currently planning a four-week soccer tournament with tenth-grade students from two local high schools. The tournament is called “métele un gol a tu futuro,” or Score a Goal for your Future! Before each game, the FIMRC promoters will give a talk to all of the participants to inform them about setting goals, family planning and myths about birth control and pregnancy. We are just three weeks away from the start of the tournament and we cannot be more excited! We are very thankful to the Peace Corps Volunteers and their hard work during this amazing partnership! With the end of the volunteer season we just want to say one more time “THANK YOU!” We are so lucky to have had such amazing groups of volunteers from all around the United States! From continued growth of our Diabetes and Nutrition clubs to new record events such as Women’s Health fairs and Health Bingo, none of which would be possible without the incredible help, support, and hard work of our volunteers. We miss you all! Cheers from Anconcito!

In August, FIMRC Project Anconcito was lucky enough to host a wonderful group of engineering students from Roger Williams University! The volunteers came to Anconcito and worked on safe water access throughout the local schools, where there was previously no access to safe drinking water before their assistance years ago. During this week they repaired previously installed UV purified water fountains, analyzed potential sites for new projects, and educated local Ecuadorian students on what it means to be an engineer! Thank You Roger Williams University for providing the community of Anconcito with clean drinking water!

We are very happy to announce that we finally inaugurated our long-awaited Hypertension support group. Special thanks to the volunteers and professors from Alma College and Denver School of Nursing 👏🏼 We could not have made this possible without your guidance and training. We already have 18 registered patients and we are looking forward to continue seeing the positive impact it is creating in the community!
