One of the benefits of a good strength program is that it will build your strength not just in the positions you commonly use in your daily life but also in deeper, more extreme ranges of motion that we tend to neglect and avoid wherever possible.

When was the last time you were in a really deep squat or a long lunge position?

How good do you think your strength, balance, and coordination are in those types of positions if you can't even remember the last time you used them?

If you bumped up against some difficult terrain that required you to be able to crouch down low, crawl on your hands and knees, jump over or step across some large obstacle, how do you think you would you perform?

It's hard to measure the psychological benefits of being able to easily navigate the physical challenges we find ourselves presented with without having to limit where we can wander.

Being physically fit gives us the freedom to be spontaneous. And it reminds us that we are fit for survival and prepared for whatever challenges life decides to throw at us.

The idea that health = skinny is one of the most harmful misconceptions pervading the health and fitness space because it causes people to do the following:

Calorie restriction + lots of high intensity or long duration cardio.

This is a deadly combination because your body has no choice but to break down muscle and other vital components in order to meet the energy demands of the workout.

This recipe speeds up muscle loss (one of the primary causes of decline as we age) and slows down our metabolism leading to regaining whatever fat was lost and then some.

All of this drags us further away from our goal of preserving health and vitality as we age.

The fool chooses one form of exercise, becomes too emotionally invested in it, and then rationalizes why all other forms of exercise are either 'not as good' or 'harmful'.

Then he is free to perpetually work on his strengths while never having to face his deficiencies.

Don’t be a fool.

The biggest bang for your buck health-wise is in investing some effort in the areas you've most neglected.

This is your reminder to get out of your comfort zone and do something that challenges you in ways you're not used to.

In Defense of the Squat for Old People | Nick Delgadillo, SSC

A loud minority of Internet Fitness Experts (IFEs) are busy proliferating the idea that the squat is of limited use and, in some cases, downright dangerous. Some assert that the squat is an advanced movement, potentially requiring upwards of 60 corrective exercises for the fixing of movement deficiencies before actually learning it. Others dismiss it completely since they’re not interested in being powerlifters, muscle-bound, or injured, while some just want to focus on aesthetics and more quad development, or any number of other reasons they can find to avoid squatting.

A lot of men will claim barbell squats and deadlifts have a poor risk to reward ratio. Often times the real issue is they have never been taught how to do them with proper technique and an appropriate amount of weight.

Something else worth noting is a lot of men are chronic ego lifters (they love to use too much weight on every exercise) which obviously affects the risk to reward ratio on barbell squats and deadlifts (and any other exercise for that matter)...

Do this while minimizing processed ingredients and ignoring any propaganda about red meat, saturated animal fats, or carbohydrates being bad for you and you'll be ahead of 90% of people.

Whatever else you're doing while this isn't in place is really just moving the furniture around on the titanic.
